4 out of 5 stars Mio C529 Navigation   September 18, 2007

Pros:

It was really a great unit with all the features you can find from other known expensive GPS units. I have no problems with the map routings which I believe it is using the 2007 tele-atlas maps. Tried this unit in Los Angeles and Michigan's suburb area and never had a miss-route. The features that I like most is that you can watch video's "AVI or MP4 format" and can play mp3's musics while your navigation is on or active. My bluetooth phone pairing works well. I can receive and make calls from this device. The PC synchronization is great wherein you can easily drag and drop files from this unit to your PC once plugged in and without the use of Active-sync too. I can't remember though if I installed a driver so that it will act as a regular external hard drive.

Cons:
I'm a Mio C310x owner before so I'm comparing these two units. The only thing that I wished that MIO should have included also for their C520 units are the external buttons for the volume and menu controls. They had these buttons on their C310x but not on this unit anymore. Also C310x uses the regular 3.5mm headphone jack while the C520 uses a headphone jack similar to your cellphone 'smaller'. Also, I noticed that the speed warning is no longer working for this unit although I believe this unit has this features as advertised. I had a chance to talk to one of their engineers and told me that the speed warning is no longer included on the 2007 edition of tele-atlast maps.

But to top it all.. it's worth buying this unit. If you don't want to pay more and wanted all the good features that other known GPS has such as the 'text to speech', then this is the unit you may want to consider.

I won't hesitate to recommend this to my friends and relatives.

4 out of 5 stars Mio C520 - a great value   September 17, 2007

A fine portable car navigator. My second experience after 3 years with a Magellan Road Mate. I enjoy the cable-less versatility and the ability to pocket it when leaving the car. -- The Magellan was stolen, because the bracket was in plain sight.--

This unit has too many features to name, and the only detractor is, if anything, too much information. It calls by yards every turn.

A superior buy.

However still bought the Mio C520 and so glad i did, my last two cars had factory Navigation, so I use them all the time,,,,this Navi is amazing very fast and easy to use.
I love the POI so easy to find a publix and other places.

I would buy this in a heartbeat, much nicer the the nuvi 350 and love the size, its so light and easy to mount.

UPDATE: after more use this navi had a large lag to it and started to have issue bought another one to replace this and love the navigon...

5 out of 5 stars overpriced and maps are weak   September 10, 2007

Ok it's been almost a year now. I regret I ever purchased this. It doesn't have Atarmon, gets lost on the highway in the CBD, can't find some streets, it got confused in Hunter Valley, and the maps are way overpriced! $300 for North America! When I went to Canada I bought a TomTom for half that price. What a rip off!!

I think I'll go with a TomTom next time. They actually have a user corrected database function.

I'd lower my rating to 2 stars but I don't know how.

4 out of 5 stars Good unit, especially after some modifications   September 7, 2007

This unit looked impressive and gorgeous when I played with it in Circuit City. The first time I used it on the road, I noticed the street name of the next turn was hard to read especially when the road is a bit bumpy. I needed to glance at the street name often because Samantha's pronuciation is robotic and at times hard to understand. Well, with some hints from the forums of gpspassion.com and about 5 hours of experimenting and poking at the code, I finally succeeded in changing the next turn street name from a measly 16-point to a much more readable 25-point bold font. I also changed the current street name from 16-point to 19-point bold. You can see a picture with the new display as a "customer image" above.

I also recommend that you choose one of the "skins" offered by Phi38, Therock, or Riks in the Gpspassion forums. I am using the Phi38 skin. Now I can tap the current street name to switch between day and night display, tap the next turn street name to display the entire route, tap another button to mute, tap yet another to switch between 2D and 3D; all that right on the main display. Ask questions on the forum if you need help (but do read the posts first because people there don't like newbies asking questions already answered previously).

I was a bit disappointed that the US model does not have the standard European power cradle with the power cord to the side. The US version has the power cord to the bottom making mounting on the dash much harder (in California, you are not supposed to mount the unit to the windshield).

I applied a screen protector to my unit. It was called "Screenguardz". I ordered a pack of 15 for about $11. To find the right size, search for Nuvi 650 because it has the exact display size as Mio C520.
