Good but not perfect May 27, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this GPS about a month ago. Acquisition time, route calculation and recalculation times are excellent. My previous Gramin took forever to find POI's and calculate and recalculate routes and this was the main reason for purchasing the new GPS.
Routing is OK. I discovered a few errors in the maps in the Boston area but nothing that will make it a deal killer. Menue takes some time to get used to but after a short learning curve is actualy excellent and better than the Garmin (you must read the manual!).
TTS is OK. The biggest con is that for several highways the TTS GPS uses unfamiliar road names instead on road numbers. It doesn't happen a lot but when it does it's a little confusing.
The biggest con is map update by Mio. I purchased this GPS in early May. Mio published a map update on April but I still need to pay more than $80 to get the update. Now I'm stuck with 2007 maps even though I purchased the GPS in May 2008. When you buy a GPS, you expect to have the latest maps included. In addition, it seems that all of the firmware updates are published for the European market and the US market is a little neglected.
Overall, I'm happy with the GPS.
MS Outlook Sync Problems May 25, 2008 I spent two hours with MIO Tech Support figuring out why the MIO C520 was importing the address from my Outlook incorrectly. Finally, the Tech specialist told me that I have uncovered a known bug and the MIO is working on it. If it was a known bug, why did they keep me on the phone for two hours? I wonder how many of the professional reviewers (CNET etc) actually tried importing their contacts. The C520 is close to a year old, how much more time do they need to correct a fundamental bug which affects their marketing and sales pitch directly. If you want to use your Outlook with your GPS, stay away from this product.
Mio C520 Hard to See - Many Features May 24, 2008 The first C520 I purchased had a power supply problem (probably with the DC cord) and failed within a few hours of use. The replacement has not exhibited any of those problems. I purchased the Mio because of it's larger screen size and lower cost. Many skins are available online, so you're not stuck with the format the manufacturer devised. I've tried several of these skins, but none give a bigger view of roads and locations like the Garmins and Magellans. With my 61 year old eyes, I'm beginning to think a GPS with less features and larger graphics is the way to go. My other GPSs are IWays. I particularly like the IWay 550 - a very large and bright screen (it does overheat at times, though). If you like to tinker with your GPS, the Mio C520 is for you.
Excellent product May 21, 2008 This is a tremendous product that I have used to drive all over the east coast and I have let a delivery guy use it for local deliveries and no issues or problems. Very easy to use.
Good for major cities...not so wonderful for the rurals May 19, 2008 The Mio C520 is overall a pretty good GPS Navigator. I recently moved from WA to MN and used it in harmony with AAA Triptik pretty well. A few negative points were that if you didn't hit the exact spot that it believed to be the via point, it would continue to try and route you back to the via point for several miles or until you edited the route and removed that via point. Another negative aspect of this GPS (as is probably the case with most GPS units) is that it can not effectively route you around rural areas. On the plus side, we used this unit to get to some addresses that we were having a hard time locating on a conventional map. This unit comes packed with everything you need to pull it out of the box, hook it up in your car and go. There is one thing that is a big negative (in my opinion). As soon as I purchased this product, there was a map update for it. Unfortunately you have to buy the update for over $80 with shipping and handling. This is definitely something to keep in mind when you purchase this device. I bought 2 of these (one for my wife and one for me) so that is a $160+ investment within 2 weeks of buying it.
