MAGELLAN GPS 4000 September 19, 2007 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
THIS UNIT HAS ALL OF THE NEWS STREET NAMES. THE OTHER UNITS I CHECKED OUT COULD NOT FIND MAJOR ROADS. I HAVE PUT THIS UNIT ON OUR NEW PUMPER FIRE TRUCK AND IT WORK GOOD.
Very Good GPS September 17, 2007 16 out of 17 found this review helpful
I have been very pleased with my Magellan 4000. I have owned it for 2 weeks and it has traveed 2000 miles so far.
Pros: Good screen size, very accurate, easy to use out of the box, comes with all the accesories that you need, partnership with AAA, excellent color/visibility, reasonably priced
Cons: Incompatible with Mac, must buy Unzip in order to update unit, sometimes one touch does not register, no mileage scale
I chose the 4000 because I didn't want all of the add ons. I believe a printer should print, a fax should fax, and a cell phone should make calls. I believe purchasing each device for its intended use makes for a better device. This why I didn't want the bluetooth or MP3 capable GPS's. That is one of the big reasons I wanted Magellan because you could get the large screen without all of the other features, unlike Garmin. Also, the Magellan was partnered with AAA of which I am a member, I was familiar with them from renting Hertz vehicles, and the price was over $150 less than Garmin for a comparable (used loosely) unit.
I have owned 2 Honda Accords with navi where I thought the Navigation was vastly superior to the Magellan, but they were $2000 options of which I hope to avoid in the future. Also, I am sure just by virtue of being integrated fully into the automobile makes the factory installed navi more advanced. Having said this, if I had never had navi before, I would think the Magellan was a perfect GPS. It proved very accurate and trustworthy on my recent trips to Florida. I think any one would be happy with this unit that is looking for a simple, reliable, and inexpensive GPS.
user friendly GPS September 11, 2007 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
This is a great GPS...very easy to use. I bought one for my "techno-challenged" husband and another for a "directionally challenged" friend. They both love this unit and found it very helpful. I wish my car unit was as easy to use! We all love the touch screen.
Great Help August 26, 2007 16 out of 16 found this review helpful
I just purchased a second unit to give my husband. He gave me a hard time about buying one in the first place but after using it while on vacation this summer (in Arizona) he agrees that it completely saved our trip. We were able to rerout easily and it helped us judge time and distance between long distance sites.
Now, he is getting one for an early birthday present before our travel soccer season starts with the two of us going different directions with our kids each weekend.
I highly suggest this unit. It was easy to program, find alternate routes and keep us able to enjoy our trips!
Great product for price August 20, 2007 31 out of 31 found this review helpful
Recently purchased the Maestro 4000 for a trip to Philadelphia from Boston. I considered other Magellellan products (3100, 4040) and other brands but liked the screen size, AAA database and price ($335 when purchased, now down to $299). Overall the product worked very well.
Navigating the menus is relatively easy, Magellan keeps your options simple, Entering an address, looking up a AAA Point of Interest, setting or canceling a route is a matter of point, listen, click. In fact my wife, not a gadget gal, found it easy to locate tourist sites in Philly without any help.
I found the system to be very accurate, particularly when directing me through confusing freeway on and off ramps. The split screen visual when taking a compound off-ramp is very helpful. The AAA database is extensive though it doesn't contain every listing you might like (for example, I could not find a single Friendly's Rest. listing...though many other chains are located).
Did not have any problems with freezes over a three week period, though you will need the in-car charger (included) since battery life seems about 2 hours. Voice is friendly and clear (particularly like the female reminder to safely make a u-turn when I miss a turn). The windshield mount worked better than I expected.
Things to improve: 1. Software to map route on your computer then upload to GPS. I have not been able to find any software that will allow me to do this on the 4000. This means you must rely on the GPS routing software. They include some software on the CD (pc only) but it is primitive and I couldn't quite figure it out.
2. Need to be aware of the differences between Routing Options (e.g., Fastest Route, Shortest Route, Most Freeways). Fastest route sometimes took me off freeway through the boonies...just need to be aware of this.
3. Related to #1, manipulating the automatic GPS routes is cumbersome. If you just go with what they program, you are good.
Overall, the 4000 is well worth the (declining) price. If you don't need BlueTooth and Voice Command you can save over the more expensive 4040 and 4050. I do think the AAA database is worth the investment. I would just like the option to map a route on my computer and then upload to GPS.
