5 out of 5 stars Garmin Nuvi 250   April 7, 2008
Found to be an extremly easy to use GPS system to use in any car you own that has a cigarette lighter. The only difficulty is when a new street is encountered in a rapidly developing area. Otherwise this is a simple very useful item. Very reasonably priced through Amazon.com.

4 out of 5 stars Works well, but with some annoyances   April 7, 2008
I received the Nuvi 250 as a gift. Setup and using it was fairly easy and took less than a couple of minutes. It acquired the satellites in less than a minute. The following are positive and not-so-good experiences.

The good:
1. The touch screen is very responsive and easy to use.
2. Route calculation is quick.
3. Reroutes the destination fairly quickly.

The not-so-good:
1. This is probably Google's fault - we are spoiled by getting the information through search. This is not so easy with Nuvi. You will have to first enter the city name then search in that context. Also, you should know whether a destination is categorized as an attraction or something else. Otherwise, you will not able to find the destination. It would be great, if it does auto-complete like Google does, so the destinations can be found quickly.
2. I tested the directions in and around San Jose, where I live. While the directions are correct, they are neither faster nor shorter, so there is still no match for human intelligence.
3. The voice command just says, "Turn left" or "tun right", but doesn't say the street name. This is a little bit annoying when you are in downtown area, where the streets are closer. So, you wouldn't know if 0.2 miles is the very next street or the one next to it without looking at the screen.

Overall, it is a very good unit that does a decent job of taking you from point A to point B.

4 out of 5 stars Great choice!   March 28, 2008

Love the unit! Compact, reliable, great database for points of interest, restaurants, gas, and hotels. Fits in a shirt pocket. Quick satellite recognotion. Best windshield mount out there. 8 hours of battery time make it great for city touring on foot or hiking in the woods. Will give altitude as you hike in the mountains. SD chip reader is nice for viewing digital pictures while on the road. Standard size easier in the pocket, consider the Wide version if your vision is not what it used to be. Dims automatically at night. Pleasant voice and easy all-touchscreen controls. No Bluetooth, but I seldom would need it. Kids names it "Sacajawea" ie. Lewis and Clark, and nicknamed 'her' "Sacki." Good GPS choice, no regrets.

5 out of 5 stars No complaints   March 28, 2008

This is an excellent entry level GPS system. I live in a developing community but the maps seem current with only minor exceptions. Until they are able to update themselves in near realtime every system will have this problem.

I purchased this system to use when traveling and was pleasantly surprised that in travel destinations I thought I knew well this device was able to find routes unknown to me to shorten trips. The highway avoidance feature is great too when you want to get away from it all!

If I have once complaint is that the window mount worked well for a while but now seems to loose suction on longer trips. I can certainly live with that.

5 out of 5 stars I dont know how I've live this long without one   March 28, 2008
This thing gets me around LA with no problems. The good: tons of POIs, my girlfriend and I went on a road trip and this thing found us hotels, parks, and gas stations. Also, it has a lot of great features, I won't list them. The bad: the database is outdated, like 2005 (doesn't bother me), take a while to get satellite reception (by while I mean like 2 minutes), and it does not have text to speech (but I know how to read so it's fine) I see this type of product like the next cell phone, everyone should have one.
