Will save your marriage September 26, 2008 I bought the 270 because my brother finally took his garmin handheld unit back. The 270 is intuitive, speedy, has all the features you care about (unless you're a freak and sport a bluetooth headset at all times) and has really come down in price. I was amazed by how intuitive its controls are and the abundance of points of interest. I felt like having pagliacci pizza, went to POI's, food, spell, typed in pagl and hit enter. 3 seconds later, I was on my way. Despite the price being 25 dollars cheaper on amazon, I bought mine at costco.com so if the thing dies, I can return it.
My only disappointment with this is the dashboard disk the unit came with. It wouldn't stick to the dashboard at all. However, the windshield suction cup works like a champ.
Buy this unit and save your marriage :)
Awesome Unit! September 23, 2008 I bought this for a trip to Italy where I would be driving through Tuscany. What a great purchase! "Lisa" saved my butt more than once on roads that I never would have been able to navagate without "her" - from main highways to local roads to dirt paths! I was very happy with the performance and the "safety camera zone" warnings (europe's version of the unmanned speed trap) even in small towns. The size was a real plus as it was very transportable - even in a shirt pocket.
There are a couple of limitations - probably typical of ANY GPS. It doesn't work really well in some of the old towns when walking around - I think not enough "sky" access to find the satellites. Also tracking you as you walk isn't really good - perhaps you aren't walking fast enough to match the "update " rate on the screen - perhaps there is a set-up parameter that I dodn't have set properly (it IS a new unit to me). Sometimes "Lisa" attempted to route us down closed off "walking streets" - and once down a one way street in the university section of Bologna.
Overall, really, really minor points in a very impressive overall performance.
A User-friendly GPS September 23, 2008 We bought a Garmin nuvi 270 recently as it seems to be the only one of the Garmin products with Europe maps loaded, and at a reasonable price. We love it. It is very user friendly and I like the fact that it is portable. I just find that the accessories for it adds up dollar-wise. As well, we are running out of memory already when we had only half a dozen of addresses in the unit. We now need to invest another $30 or so on a memory card. As a first-time GPS buyer, I'd recommend it.
jaw-dropper; you won't find so much quality for so little $$ September 17, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Wow -- $181.00 for this GPS, that INCLUDES Europe maps!? I bought this model from Amazon several months ago, for at least $100 more, but as it gets more dated, and the price keeps dropping, it becomes a better and better deal -- make that steal!
I bought this while living in Europe for work, and it navigated me flawlessly through the streets of Belgium, the backroads of Normandy, and the country lanes of Dutch Tulip country. I also used it in Italy, with great success.
Now I'm back in the U.S., and it has been a godsend as I navigate my way around the DC metro area.
I'll sum up: excellent Europe and U.S. maps, still very much in date. Very easy to use. Large screen. Updateable via UBS connection to your computer.
I know people who have paid literally hundreds more dollars for their GPS model. This lacks features like mp3, but if you are looking for an excellent navigator -- with Europe maps thrown in to boot -- you've found an excellent deal.
Also, it's not clear on Amazon, but this unit COMES WITH a charging unit/AC adaptor, for in-car use -- no need to buy an extra one.
Highly recommended!
Practical navigator September 16, 2008 This is our second Garmin. Our north America unit has helped us find some of the most challenging mountain addresses imaginable. Now we purchased a European unit with hopes of finding those hard to locate addresses in Portugal. My married daughter was thrilled with the hand-down of the original unit.
