[[ASIN:B000PCBVA6 TomTom ONE XL Portable Extra-wide Screen GPS Navigation System]Excellent navigational device. Would recommend to anyone traveling by car or foot. Prevents unecessary disagreements when trying to locate destination. Excellent resource for locating "points of interest". Would highly recommend it's purchase before next trip.!
Easy to use but not very good routing capability November 24, 2007 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
I liked the many easy features of the device. The Map representation is one of the best. The limitation for me however was the consistently complicated routes it produced for places I knew how to reach. I live in the North East so the use of highways is preferred and often produces simpler routes.
I read several reviews prior to my purchase about the inferior routing of the TomTom when compared with Magellan or Garmin but refused to accept it until I tried it myself. The reviews in my case were correct.
I ended up returning the TomTom and got the Magellan Maestro 4050 which produced consistently much better routing results and included many extras such as a Wall charger, AAA POI database, Bluetooth and much more for only $30 more.
Don't Turn Your Back On It. November 14, 2007 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
I am a retired deputy sheriff. Smart deputies have a saying: "Don't ever turn your back on a prisoner." My agency uses TomTom for out of county prisoner transports. Being familiar with the operation and reliability of the devise, I purchased TomTom XL for my personal use. It has come through for me, even in the north Georgia mountains, and it always gets me back on track during trial runs when I deliberately take wrong turns in familiar territory. However, it will not take me to a friend's home, twenty-seven miles away. The maps are accurate, but it consistently tells me I have "arrived at my destination" at a totally different address, about a mile from my friend's home. When I am at my friend's home it will correctly show my location on the map, but it will not take me there from home. This is the only way it has ever failed me, but I don't trust it. I have brought this to the manufacturer's attention and received requests for additional information, but the problem hasn't been fixed. Don't turn your back on it!
I love this GPS! November 14, 2007 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Other reviewers, including GPS magazines, said this was an easy to operate product and that is one of the main reasons I got it. I love it! I understood how to operate it within 10 minutes of getting it out of the box and turning it on. My confidence in driving had been flagging since I am a grandma type and was starting to worry about making wrong turns, finding exits out of strange airports, etc. I am getting ready to move from a rural area to a metropolitan area and this product will really help me figure out my new surroundings. I love the size, the features, and the feel of it. My only problem has been how to keep it on the windshield, but I just didn't want to attach it permanently. The night driving feature is really cool and the voices are great. It has good volume control and just is really simple to figure out. This is my first GPS and I would recommend this one highly since I am now a believer.
Great GPS but... November 8, 2007 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
DO NOT update the software. TomTom still has not addressed the problem of using the 'home' software to update the GPS. If you do this, even if you made a back up, the GPS will be an expensive paperweight that flashes a big red X. (This is as of 8 November 07)
