| Customer Reviews:
This US model has worked great for me in Europe May 31, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
NOTE: I bought this in the States, didn't open it until I arrived in Germany, and it has only been used in Europe.
I work in Germany and wanted to get a GPS to get around without spending too much on a GPS. Obviously GPS systems with only US maps are cheaper than any dual US/Europe GPS, so I researched different brands and models that were compatible with online map upgrades. I found a great pick with the TomTom One XL. I bought the system when on sale for $200, and I bought the "Western Europe" map upgrade online for $120 (thru TomTom home). There is not enough internal memory, so I put the new map on a SD card. I had a few issues after purchase and download of the Europe map, but customer service was great (no waiting on the phone, and they stayed on with me until the issue was fixed).
OK, so the new map wasn't as simple as "plug-n-play," but after 30 minutes on the phone with U.S. customer service troubleshooting my problem, I ran a flash file on my XL, I turned on the system, and after 45 seconds of searching for sattelites, the GPS was tracking my location in Germany.
The interface is adequate, with large buttons on the 4.3" screen that make it easy to choose. The tracking of my location has pin-point accuracy, and when I turn on the system, it takes less than 60 seconds to locate my position. My mount is solid, and I have excellent reception without any tacky antennas. POIs are slacking, but I'm just trying to get from point A to point B. I'm a basic user.
Overall, I'm very pleased with this US/Canada/W Europe GPS for only $320 total. It has been a great convenience getting around city and rural Europe, especially since road signs and names can be confusing here.
tomtom failed so did Best Buy May 28, 2008 2 out of 8 found this review helpful
This unit failed miserably on the first try out...We live in Henderson, NV, just outside las Vegas...our first itinerary was to Bolder City center about 15 miles away...the itinerary was supposed to take us from hwy 95 to hwy 93, but instead it directed us south on 95 towards Searchlight forty miles away...we of course stayed on the highway which becomes hwy 93...once we passed the instructed turn off, we expected to be warned of a route recalculation, but none came...as we approached Bolder City we were directed to make a right hand turn which I assume was to take us back to hwy 95...the right turn was into a trailer park...I took the unit back to Best Buy and ended up paying a 15% restocking fee which Best Buy is quick to tell you is explained on the back of your receipt...the receipt you received after you purchased the unit...I smell a class action suit coming and I will be first in line...By the way, the reason we did not get a recalculation warning is because the unit does not have automatic recalculation...how pathetic is that... Update to review...after an email complaint to Best buy, I was contacted by Best Buy and refunded the restock fee which I appreciate...regarding the moron comment, this was not my first GPS...I know the route recalculation command and did not receive one...when I returned it to Best Buy I was told that model did not have that feature...
Great navigation unit! May 27, 2008 I got it for my wife to be simple and useful as much as possible! It works great! No complains at all. TomTom software and speech commands are awesome. Go for it, you wont be sorry!
Great GPS unit for the Price!!!! May 27, 2008 This Tom Tom is an excellent choice for the first time buyer, who doesn't want to spend a lot on a great GPS system. On our trip to New Orleans, and driving around the City of New Orleans, it was a breeze! We didn't have to stop and ask for directions once! Put in where you are going or look up the Point of Interest, and you are practically there!
Widescreen, fast re-routing, excellent online updates May 24, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The Tom Tom One XL is larger than most portable GPS navigation units, requiring a special case or a larger GPS case for those that travel frequently. The Li-Ion battery does not have a very long life, and the self-discharge rate is very rapid. I do not recommend leaving it uncharged for weeks. The windshield mount is fairly easy to use, but I do not like how they use the mini-USB connector at the base of the GPS. It seems rather flimsy but it gets the job done. The touch screen is very sensitive and easy to use except in a few instances. Zooming in and out of the main map takes some finesse. I had to use my nails to activate those "precision" controls.
Pros: -Sensitive touch screen. -Intuitive menu system. -Excellent online support with additional voices, color schemes, map updates, and extra maps. -Fast re-routes in case you run into unexpected construction zones. I was able to navigate out of a congested area with the help of the One XL. -Clear and useful voice instructions if it loads the correct route. -Easy to add favorites/travel destinations. -Has the entire map of the US pre-loaded. -LCD does not entirely wash out in bright sunlight and can be legible in broad daylight.
Cons: -Lack of text to speech support so the GPS does not read off each street. -Inefficient routing. An online magazine did a test between several GPS vendors and Tom Tom consistently performed the worst by choosing the longest and slowest route even though the user selected "Fastest Route". -They should have included a clear-skin to prevent scratching the display. Even though it was designed to be touched, I still recommend buying a clear-skin overlay to prevent any superficial damage. -The large and bulky size of the GPS makes it difficult to find versatile storage cases locally. -The suction cup mount has a flimsy looking arm with a plastic ball and socket joint.
Overall: I have always wanted to buy a GPS system just to have maps of the entire US contained in a small computer without having to lug around road maps on road trips. The Tom Tom One XL fulfills this requirement, but the routing software needs to be fixed to provide more logical routes under the "Fastest Route" setting. I give it 4/5 stars mainly because of the inefficient routing. However, the re-routing did not fail me when I needed it the most. In the worst case, you can just use the Tom Tom ONE XL as a real-time mapping tool if you do not want to depend on its routing algorithm.
