5 out of 5 stars The Vista HCx has it all   April 12, 2008
The Vista HCx Is the best GPS I ever used. I have owned the etrex, the venture, and now the Vista HCx. This small machine is a wonder. Besides a wide range of features, I appreciated the most the battery life, the color screen and n exceptionally sensitive antenna. When I first unpacked it from the box (I live in Lebanon, Middle East, it took so little time to discover 3 satellites and that's from inside the house, 2-3 meters away from the nearest window. The regular Vista took about 20 minutes on the first run and in dense forests I lost coverage for long distances. I used it on my snowmobile, my ATV and in my Mercedes Gwagen without any problem. It's completely waterproof and works fine in extremely cold weather conditions. The Vista batteries lasted for at most 10 hours, while the HCx could run on up to three times that tiem on two batteries. It's connectivity is great (the serial cable of the models before gave me a hard time). One only drawback is that its' accessories such as the power cable are very expensive. I recommend the Vista HCx for everybody who plans to buy a GPS. You won't be sorry

5 out of 5 stars Great Product, Great Service!   April 11, 2008
This is my 2nd purchase of the Vista HCX thru Amazon. As always, delivery service was excellent and on time!

Judging from comments from most people, this product is great and I agree! I used it mainly for mountain/road biking, running and driving.

Receiver sensitivity is amazing, once you get a lock, it's actually more difficult to lose the signal!
Battery life is fantastic, I'm getting roughly 14hrs on rechargeable NiMH.
Screen brightness is good even in bright sunshine.
Road routing capability : this feature is extremely useful especially when I drive or when I go road biking.
Tracking : In combination with a 2G SD card, I can set to 1 sec interval and record all my mountain biking tracks.

There are more great features in this unit but these are the main ones for me. It is difficult to find anything bad with this unit apart from the fact that the screen is a bit small, but this is expected from handheld units.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic reception!   April 7, 2008
I sold my much older Legend model for this one, and I should've done it sooner! The HCx has fantastic reception. It blows away what I was able to do with my Legend. I'm constantly amazed at the sensitivity of this receiver.

I purchased a mapping SD card, and while a little pricey, it does everything I need for a general purpose GPSR. It appears to be very rugged, as it's been dropped a few times with no adverse effects. It has a nice, crisp color display which doesn't eat into battery life too badly.

If you're looking for a good, rugged, reliable, color handheld GPS with excellent sensitivity, this is the model to check out!

4 out of 5 stars Almost perfect   April 6, 2008

If you have been frustrated by the inability of the previous incarnations of this product to acquire satellites when you were in moderate tree cover, or deep canyons, this is the unit you have been waiting for. I've been delighted by the improved capabilities of the new antenna. In the few months I've had this GPS it has never failed to acquire.

The menus have changed, but once I've gotten used to them. I think they are an improvement. Having a dedicated `menu' button works better than scrolling the curser over to select menus

The only reason I couldn't give this product 5 stars was that I have an old Black & White etrex vista which I had used to save a lot of tracks. I found that I was unable to download many of my tracks to the new unit. It seems they reduced the number of track points from 750 down to 500 so it truncated many of my tracks. Although annoying, I still wouldn't have let it bother me too much if I was told that a fix was on the way. But instead, the response from customer service was basically "Too bad all the new products like that." As cheap as memory is these days, and the fact that this latest unit has tons of expandable memory you would thing Garmin could be a little more accommodating of their long term customers. Allow me to store them on the expandable memory, give me a conversion tool (although this would reduce my resolution), something, anything, but don't just tell me "sucks to be you!"

5 out of 5 stars Bought the Garmin over Magellan   April 6, 2008
Bought the Garmin over the Magellen. For the past 5 years I have been using the Magellan Mariner 330 which has served my purposes, this eTrex Vista HCx is just the greatest upgrade. Coupled with the microSD expansion card, color daylight LCD screen, looooooooong battery life and turn for turn ability I'm a very happy camper. I also purchased the Maps for Topo/City USA. Bought everything from Amazon cheaper and everything was free shipping!
