Great Unit at Great Price April 5, 2008 This is my first GPS unit. I purchased it for use while backpacking. It is very light considering all the features packed into it, and lasts incredibly long on only 2 AA. The display is bright, and the interface is fairly easy to use.
The only down side that I have seen so far is being limited to using the Garmin maps (which I've heard you must purchase individually for each unit you have). I wish Garmin had partnered up with NatGeo Topo maps, but the resolution of the Garmin topo maps should be decent enough for most people.
With memory prices being so cheap right now, get a 2GB (the max the unit can support) memory card to store all your maps.
Bottom line, I love it!
Ecellent April 2, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Got this unit because of the small size and thinner profile. I also have the 60CSx and use them both for GeoCaching and in the car as well. The eTrex is as accurate as the more expensive 60 series and actually has a brighter screen [even if it is a little smaller] I'd recommend this to someone looking for an accurate - easy to read - expandable - GPSr for hiking or camping and in car use. I'm glad that I bought this one.
User unfriendly April 1, 2008 9 out of 15 found this review helpful
I think this will eventually be a nice product. But, it is not intuitive and very difficult to learn how to use. The manual and other instructions are close to awful. Their are no instructions on how to geocache, just downloadable cache cordinates.
BTW I may not be a techno-geek, but I also am not a techno-dummy (I have a real PhD). This is not a user-friendly product to learn how to use.
Be advised (like I was): You'll need to buy maps and a memory chip.
Screen Too Small March 29, 2008 2 out of 10 found this review helpful
I found the GPS sensitivity very good. Satellite acquisition times very good.
The unit is too thick. The etrex units are in serious need of a redesign. They have been the same for years. Why is the tiny screen on the bottom ? It should be on top.
The biggest problem is the screen. It is too small. It is pretty much worthless. The resolution is pretty poor too.
Also the included basemap is pretty much worthless. For any decent mapping you are forced to shell out another $200 to buy the Topo 2008 & City Navigator NT maps. So this little door stop will really cost you $426. Be prepared to spend even more to get the accessories that you need bringing things up to $500+
Mine is going back since I picked up a Colorado 300 to try out.
This unit is not recommended.
Vista HCx - Great Unit so far March 27, 2008 My previous Legend Hx died and was out of warranty, so rather than pay the $100 Garmin wanted to fix it, I just purchased this new unit. So far this has been working great. I use to geocache and general outdoor stuff with it. The newer receiver has been much faster and better to lock on under heavy cover. This is the first of three Etrex's where I can now even get reception in my house!
