4 out of 5 stars Love the Garmin   January 12, 2008
Once I bought the topo map and the 2gb chip everything fell into place.. The new map has all the streets around not to mention the mts. around us.. Elevations, trails, creeks and rivers..It made all the difference.. The map that comes with not top quality.. That is the only reason for only 4 stars instead of 5 stars.. The high sensitivity is very nice.. Great reception.. Next is to buy the city navigator map.. Can't wait to take it on a long road trip and backpacking this summer..I would recommend Garmin to a friend..

4 out of 5 stars Good GPS !   January 12, 2008
Vista is nice product . Works OK . The only problem is that users manual is quite short and if you are not familiar with GPS you should buy some books to start using all features!

3 out of 5 stars Good hardware, bad elevation calculation, clueless support   January 12, 2008

The hardware of the eTrex Vista HCx works well, and it seems to record reasonable elevation numbers in the tracks. But, the calculated total ascent with software version 2.5 is too low by a factor of at least 2, compared to other devices as well as to a friends Vista HCx with software version 2.3. Although several users (at least) have sent messages to Garmin about the problem (and posted copies of their messages to various forums), the people that answer the phone in tech support claim to know nothing about it. So if you care about the total ascent calculation, you should avoid this unit until Garmin first acknowledges that there is a problem and second, fixes it.

3 out of 5 stars Read carefully, you might need to buy something with this...   January 8, 2008

I was disappointed to learn that the person I gave this to couldn't use it right away without buying the map card for it. I don't know, I would think it should be ready to use. My purchase was for Christmas, so I guess I was in a rush and didn't read everything properly. My brother seemed to be happy with it though, so if you have any geocachers on your list...

5 out of 5 stars Research paid off - A great GPS   January 8, 2008
This unit is everything I thought it would be after doing a good bit of research.

It is compact, easy to operate, has a super clear screen (although not huge), and great backlight allowing it to be read easily.

I have been using it for geocaching for the last few weeks, and so far the signal reception has been incredible. I have always had plenty of satellite reception even while laying the unit in my lap or or the dash while driving. It usually gets me within 6-10 feet of the cache I am looking for.

The unit is fairly intuitive, and is highly customizable. Plus it comes with Garmin's respected support (I know it sounds like a commercial, but if you check around, Garmin is rated really high on the their customer service).

The screen is not oversized for driving use, but it will provide mapping directions once Mapsource maps are purchased seperately. You may also want to get a microSD card (2GB) to hold any maps you may want to load. I got mine from Amazon for around $25.

Comes with everything you need to get going. The click stick control works very well. The side buttons are a little firm, but I guess that is due to the material around them which allows the unit to be be waterproof/resistant. The software is very customizable and you can change many things about the unit's operation.

All in all, I am very happy with this purchase.
