4 out of 5 stars garmin Etrex   July 19, 2008

A great product for the price . I looked at my needs ,bought it and it works fine . If you need just to set way points or use the altitude info(as I did ) This is the one for you. I do not need a "restaurant finder" This is for outdoor use and its waterproof.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Geocaching Tool   July 18, 2008

I purchased this item with geocaching in mind, and it has gone above and beyond my expectations. First, it has a special folder just for geocaches, which (because this product is a Garmin) can be downloaded directly from the geocaching.com website to the device, or you can enter them manually using the geocache symbol and it automatically sorts them. Secondly, it is accurate. It keeps a signal even in the woods, and is correct about coordinates to within 10 feet, usually even closer. It beeps when you are in range of a cache, which is especially useful when driving, because it tells you approximately which exit to use on the highway. Lastly, when you find one, it saves the information to its calendar so that you can log it later, and brings up the next closest automatically. This can be a drawback if you have a lot of undiscovered caches stored, because the next one on the list might actually be behind you on your route, but it's useful if you're looking for many in the same place.

This is a fairly good GPS for general use, also. It stores information about highway exits so that you can track them similarly to tracking geocaches. You can enter waypoints of all sorts and design paths among them. It has a very accurate speedometer and odometer feature, which calculates your maximum speed, moving and stopped time, and average speed across trips. As mentioned in other reviews, the default map is not great, but it does have the major highways on it, and it stores your path so you can check where you've been. It won't give you turn by turn directions, but if you want a relatively inexpensive GPS for geocaching or other waypoint finding tasks, this should be it.

4 out of 5 stars Works great but could use a better instruction manual   July 16, 2008

This product is great for geocaching - which is what we use this unit for. For those of us that are not GPS experts, the company expects a lot if they think the manual that comes with it explains things well. We are still getting used to using it in the field and I expect that practice will help us to improve. I was hoping that the manual would help us to reduce our time spent with trial and error. As far as its effectiveness as a GPS unit, I have no complaints. It is easy to download caches into the unit from the website. It would be great it the unit would store more info such as cache description or hints but it only stores the title and coordinates. It would be a 5 star rating if not for the instruction manual issue because it really is a cool little GPS unit. Much better than the basic e-trex.

4 out of 5 stars Huge improvement--with reservations.   July 5, 2008
I recently bought the eTrex Venture HC to replace my old b&w eTrex Vista. Huge improvement!

The Venture HC has a bright, contrasty screen that is MUCH easier to read. And it is light years more sensitive than the old Vista, locking onto 10-11 satellites in a matter of seconds, even indoors!

A few gripes: the new Venture seems to use the same processor as the old Vista, making scrolling or redrawing across the map s-l-o-o-o-w. And the base map in the new Venture is even WORSE than the base map on the old Vista. Compared side-by-side, Garmin has removed even major secondary roads, labels, etc. The Venture HC base map is essentially useless, thanks to Garmin's greed.

The Garmin Topo maps are pretty detailed, but expensive and clunky, based on Windows 95/98 technology. Houston, for instance, requires that you switch out two CD's to load the city. Ever heard of DVD's, guys? Both the Topo United States and the Topo Canada load fine on the eTrex Venture HC, even though the Canadian Topo is not listed as compatible on the Garmin web site.

5 out of 5 stars Garmin etrex   June 29, 2008
Hello

I purchased this to use while riding my bike & I am very please with it. I was only able to load 1 state map (SC)into the etrex but no problem.

I recommend this etrex. Good buy.

Kevin
