2 out of 5 stars Garmin Nuvi200   June 13, 2008

Garmin nüvi 200 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

Ratings would not allow me 1 star. What a piece of Junk! What u should know.
No Manual, it does not come with a manual, minimal setup guide is all u get
U cant change the battery, so Garmin can charge an arm, a leg and a bucket of blood for a battery change. Then right after sucking your blood for a battery change, usually $60.00 or more, they will discontinue the unit without any support, just like the iQue. Of course u will not have a unit for a week or 2 while they do the battery change. I guess u should buy two units.
No AC charger, only car charger, u have to buy the AC charger, so you cant put address in unit inside the house. U will normally do this while driving as most of us do on a busy schedule. Not to worry garmin has a disclaimer in case u have an accident while driving. No carrying case, not even a cheap cover, it is essential to prevent scratches to units face. No Canadian mapping, only USA. Getting a preview of turn by turn directions is no longer available, you only get up to the minute turns as u go.
Finally as it is the low end model, it will be the first to be discontinued next year, prepare the landfills. Do not send it in for a battery overhaul, by the time it comes back it will be discontinued, no support. The ique is a vastly superior product, but then their sales team went to work and lets funk america. Their customer service is Bipolar, range form stink to great depending on the bipolar moods. I own 3 different garmin units. It shows a company who makes a good product in the past decides it time to take the consumers for a ride, we have had their confidence, now let us really stick it to them

3 out of 5 stars Very good but maps won't update; hence 3 stars only   June 13, 2008

I have found this product extremely useful when driving to a destination I am unsure of, but have been unable to download the up to date maps (which I ordered on a disk) on either of my computers. This has led me to give the product only three stars.

5 out of 5 stars great deal   June 13, 2008
If your reading this you're probably trying to decide on a GPS. Garmin is the top brand, and the Nuvi 200 is their entry level model. At the time I purchased the Nuvi 200W it was 200, and the non widescreen version was 160. The wider screen is a significant improvement over the regular version. Its safer because it makes everything easier to read with a quick glance while you are in the process of driving. Also, if you have big fingers it makes typing on the touch screen much less of a headache. The 200 series has a range of models, as you move up the chain Garmin includes additional maps, text to speech and a few other features. If you don't travel out of the United States extensively the 200 will be fine. You can also pay for map upgrades if a unexpected trip to Europe comes up. Text to speech sounds better on paper than it is in practical use. I live in New England so even if there is a street sign it is usually covered by a tree, all I need to know is 'take a right' not 'take a right onto elm st'.

One of the lesser know features is that the 200 includes a walking and biking mode. The internal battery lasts about 5 hours and the unit is small enough to fit in the pocket of some cargo pants/shorts. You can do biking day trips around town and the unit will track your distance, average speed, top speed, etc. If you get hungry or thirsty you can search local restaurants and bars by type (mexican, italian, chinese, etc).

If you're looking for a GPS the Nuvi 200W is a great value with its big beautiful screen and has all the features you need to get around in style. If your looking for blu tooth, mp3 capability and other fluffy features there out there but you might want to ask yourself if you will take advantage of those ad on features to warrant their cost. Good luck!

4 out of 5 stars Love It   June 12, 2008

I have bad sense of direction and I also travel a lot. I live in the middle of nowhere and can happily live here knowing that I can drive somewhere else! The problem has been that I have a great sense of adventure and a horrible sense of direction. A bad combination in this day of horribly high gas prices. So I got a GPS with the belief that it would pay for itself with the money I save in gas!

I read all the other reviews so I knew to test it out around town before I took with me on vacation to Florida. It was close enough. It has problems with service roads. It wants to put you on the main road but I could see that I wasn't on the main road. It can't find the Panera in town, although it has been here several years, and once driving from Miami to Orlando it told me that the gas station was in five miles. The gas station was 10 miles north, and then another five miles south after you turned off of the exit ramp. Of course that was crazy, since the tank was empty, but I saw the other closer gas stations. Oh and in giving me directions it, of course, doesn't take into account the neighborhoods I'm driving through (that I would rather not drive through). All that being said, I LOVE IT!! I've named her Lucy. Lucy and I sometimes argue but in what relationship do you get along 100%? So far the problems I have just require a little common sense on my part and a few "recalculating" on her part and we are on our way.

The big screen is perfect for those of us over 40. Perfect. The lighting is good and my favorite feature is that it will give you an estimated time of arrival. For someone who is always late that is a great, great, great feature. I also like the "points of interest". Lucy can even point me to the nearest outlet mall. I'm not sure how much money I'll save this way, but I would rather spend it on a pair of shoes than a tank of gas!!

Now I have to go find Lucy a case.

3 out of 5 stars My GPS   June 10, 2008
Product arrived preloaded with an old map of the US. To install an updated map Garmin forces you to purchase a download cable at a high price (10% of the GPS purchase price).
Additional problem: take a few moments to identify unit location. My other GPS does it at a fraction of the time.
