Great when it works January 10, 2008 The Garmin 250W works great when there is good satellite link, but connectivity is inconsistent and easily affected by clouds, the weather, trees, etc. Basically it might fail to work when you need it the most.
Slow acquiring satellite signal January 9, 2008 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I purchased my 250W a couple months ago. In several occasion the GPS device failed to acquire signal within a few minutes. There were a few times when it took up to 15 minutes for it to find signal, even under clear sky outdoor. Once the signal is acquired, it is always 4/5 bars and very stable, which only makes the problem to find signal even more baffling. It was really annoying at times because it essentially forced me to "warm up" the unit before I start driving.
I have just updated the firmware of the unit, and it "seems" like my 250W is locating signals a lot faster. I will test it in other locations to verify whether the problem is fixed permanently. Even if it does, a GPS device should have satellite signal problem to begin with, so I could only give it a 3-star rating.
Overall great product January 7, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The first of these units I received must have had a defective antenna as it never found the satellite - I immediately contacted Amazon and they (as usual) went above and beyond and shipped me a replacement in 2 days (the week before Christmas no less!).
As for the performance of the unit - once I got a working one it is a great little unit. The startup time is excellent - only on especially cloudy days do I have to wait longer that 10 seconds or so for the signal to go green and start navigating. The included windshield mount is rock solid and attaches securely to both the unit and the windshield - also very easy to remove from the windshield for storage once you park.
Navigation and maps are excellent - the widescreen format really helps - only gripe is that the power adapter plugs directly into the unit instead of into the windshield mount. This means that every time you remove the unit you have to fiddle with the USB-style connector instead of just popping the unit off the windshield mount.
Overall great product - would definitely recommend it.
Note: I also purchased the leather case that fits the 660 - it fits the widescreen size of this unit perfectly.
Great technology but still need to use commonsense January 3, 2008 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
Used for a month and a half now. Very useful, the depth of the Points of Interests is amazing (and they have phone #'s!). Won't complain about features it doesn't have, there are other models if you need those features. This is a simple-to-use device that has powerful features if you dig down in the menus.
A few discoveries after 1,000 miles:
1) No user manual - Not available (as of Dec 2007) online either. 2) User Error - left in pedestrian mode and the directions got all wacky when driving. This may be the problem that others talked about. Had to switch back to driving mode and power off/on to straighten out. Troubleshooting section in a user manual should point to this. 3) Gets confused when driving under an overpass at a slow rate of speed, may think you are on the road above and recalculate several times as it tries to figure out where you really are. Very noticeable in downtown Pittsburgh, PA where there are bridges everywhere. Looking at the display helps, though! This is the only place this has happened. 4) Some Points of Interest are outdated by a year or two, just like the yellow pages and every other directory I've ever used. Newer items are there, but many small stores have been closed for quite some time. 5) It is very handy to find points of interest along your current route. Great feature, if it had a user manual you might know about it. 6) No USB cable (come on, it costs probably $1 to make). Bought one on eBay for $5 delivered. Had 3 other USB cables types at home, but none fit. 7) No user manual (deserves a second mention) - so you need to play with it for hours to find the more useful features. Just dumb. 8) Can change voice. The option is under wrench, settings, language. The English woman is much better than the default man voice. She even sounds disgusted when pronouncing "recalculating" when you miss a turn! We all love it!! 9) Never has directed me away from the destination, in circles, or on a roundabout route. Drive mostly rural settings. 10) Wish the distance to the next turn was the true distance, and not to the next "keep left" warning that prevents you from accidentally going the wrong way at major interstate clovers.
Much better than I expected, very handy to find small towns off the highway to have lunch or explore. Never realized there where so many parks. Recalculates routes quickly and smartly (haven't used detour feature), zooms screen according to speed and proximity to a turn, screen background changes according to the time of day for easier reading. Lack of manual is inexcusable.
Love it! January 2, 2008 I purchased the Garmin nuvi 250W as a Christmas gift for my husband. He loves it! He was able to start navigating immediately - so far so good, it had one time when it was running slowly but that was operator error! This seems to be a great starter GPS - great value for the money, so easy to use and great screen/display, voice directions are right on every time. I would recommend it. If you are looking for lots of bells and whistles you would have to upgrade - it does not have an MP3 player.
