5 out of 5 stars What a wonder!   November 4, 2007

This is my first GPS and I love it! I bought it because of the price and then because of the versatility (car/walking). So far, I have just used it around town picking up and dropping off teenagers. I love knowing I can find the houses on the first go around, what a time saver. I thought not having the street names announced would be a hindrance, but it is no big deal. The Garmin GPS tells me exactly when to turn and the street is completely obvious with the purple line directing you. You won't be sorry you bought this.

The first one I received worked out of the box, but stopped sensing the satellites after 2 days. I tried turning it off/on several times, tried several very open-to-the sky locations, and finally tried rebooting by pressing the reset button on the bottom, but nothing happened.

However, I found it so easy to use and better than previous models, especially at an attractive price ($300), that I returned the first one and got a replacement.

As strictly a GPS, the only limitation is that it does not speak the street names. It does speak that a turn is coming, turn here, etc. It also does list the name of the street to turn at in the label at the top of the screen. It's great both in automobile mode and in walking mode. We're spending a month in Boston which has all street names and is generally not laid out on a grid. The 250W is great in getting us around or to out-of-Boston places. Used it to drive to Marblehead yesterday; pressed the screen to show where we parked the car, changed to walking mode and then walked around. When it was time to go we retrieved the spot where we left the car, pressed 'go' and it walked us back to the car. Changed back to 'automobile' and drove home. Note the box includes a car charger but not the optional wall charger. Not a problem unless you expect to use it extensively w/o a car to recharge it with.

Unlike a previous poster, I find the maps, stores, restaurants, etc, quite up to date.

Other than getting a lemon on the first unit, I recommend it.

2 out of 5 stars My GPS is trying to kill me.   October 16, 2007

I bought this when I moved to San Francisco 3 weeks ago, and at least for SF the Garmin is more than a little buggy. Since SF has several overpasses and freeways over streets, the Garmin has trouble when I go up an on-ramp and often glitches, suddenly thinking I'm on the road below. Once when crossing the Bay Bridge it suddenly thought I'd leapt off the road and headed over water, spinning in slow circles ... a situation it didn't correct until I was well into Oakland.

I know that satellite technology isn't perfect, and it does a good job for what it is, but I'd at least expect the Garmin maps to know the difference between a one-way street and a two-way. Far too many times it plans routes that are either impossible or dangerous. Add to that the fact I've done store searches, selected the store I want to go to, and followed the direct route as instructed by the Garmin only to end up in an industrial park with no stores in sight. They really need to update their maps.

4 out of 5 stars Over all it's good   October 6, 2007

I like this GPS system. The only negative comment would be the estimate time of arrival. We tested with some places that we've already known. The worst was using highway. It estimated 1 hr. 30 min., but reality was 50 min.

5 out of 5 stars Technology at a bargain price..   September 26, 2007

We love this product for both its capability as well as its price....that is all we wanted from a portable GPS. The features that more expensive units offer provide no practical use!
