Outstanding GPS-Highly recommend December 14, 2007 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
Navigon 7100 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator
First off, let me say this is my first GPS that I have owned, however I have spent many hours researching the internet and visiting stores to find what I thought would be the best GPS for the money. After all the research, I chose the Navigon 7100. It's appearance was more appealing as compared to others I viewed on line and in the stores. However, as we all know, looks aren't everything. I reviewed the pricing as compared to the Garmin, Magellan, and Tom Tom, models with similar features. The value was definitely the Navigon 7100-especially with the current $50.00 rebate. And finally, the free traffic reporting and 3D view capabilities finally led me to finally choose the Navigon 7100. I received it the other day and have been testing it out and I must say that my research paid off because it has been everything it was advertised to be. Here are the strengths and not so strong points I have detected. Strong: 1. Excellent satellite capture. I don't know why there are others complaining about satellite capture. My Navigon locks on in less than a minute each time. I average at least 9 satellite connections. This occurs both in the city (Jacksonville, FL) and 40 miles away in the country. 2. Fast re-route calculation. I purposefully have missed a recommended turn a few times to see how long it would take for the Navigon 7100 to recalculate another route. After being asked to make a few u-turns, it immediately assessed my location and re-routed me home and to work. 3. Excellent voice capture: The 7100 allows me to use voice commands to name locations to get directions to. Very handy. I have programmed "Home" and "work" as voice commands and it immediately creates a route for me. 4.Using the Bluetooth phone capability, I have found it to be an excellent speaker phone while driving. One drawback is that it does not import your call list. If this would be fixed by Navigon, that would be a very strong selling point. 5. Very impressive screen display, especially in 3D. Both day and night screen displays are crisp, clear, and provide a lot of information. 6. Sharp looking, sturdy mounting display provides great accessibility and viewing of the 7100. No shaking of display. 7. Free lifetime Traffic & map updates (next one is 1st qtr 2008.
Not so strong: 1. Voice commands sound a little tinny. However, the speaker when using Bluetooth is clear, so I believe it is the digitized voice. However all the voice commands were on the money when I was instructed to turn. 2. Sometimes, the 7100 requests too many u-turns when missing a recommended turn. I would like to see that being an option of limiting the amount of requests of u-turns before starting route re-calculation. 3. Must read Manual thoroughly to understand menu selections. This could be a little more user friendly, but after reading the manual, I had a full grasp of using the 7100 and its features. I highly recommend downloading and using the latest edition of the manual that is on the Navigon Website in lieu of the one that comes on disk.
Well, that's it. One recommendation I can offer is to copy/backup the 2gb card file to your computer in case your lose the 2gb card or it gets corrupted. If I had to buy again, It would definitely be the Navigon 7100, and I would buy it using Amazon, which not only had the cheapest price but free shipping. If you buy the 7100, enjoy it-I am
Really cool ! December 14, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love this device! I was impressed with the device after visiting the company's website. I did a lot of research and concluded that it offered the biggest bang for the buck. The display is AWESOME...reminds me of a mini plasma TV, free traffic info. which can automatically re-route my trip is great for my daily commute, Bluetooth is very convenient to use, the Reality View and Lane Assist feature reduces stress, it's like having a co-pilot with me everyday. I highly recommend the gps unit.
navigon gps December 12, 2007 1 out of 7 found this review helpful
my purchase of navigon gps device was done based on looks alone. However I have since been able to use this device and can tell you it is as functional as it is good looking. T he three dimentional graphics are soothing to watch, the volume of information provided to the driver has to be seen to be believed. I am completely satisfied with my purchase.
Map upgrade in early 2008 is not free, according to Navigon. December 11, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I regretfully have ordered one without checking with Navigon first. Some posters have spreaded false info regard mapping data upgrade as being free. According to a Navigon representative, new mapping data will be forth coming in early 2008 and the price for upgrading map data is not yet determined. You will have to pay for new mapping data, if you want to upgrade. Essentially, my 7100 map data will be obsolete soon.
Only traffic data service is free for life for the 7100, not map data upgrade.
UPDATE: Navigon recently provided upgrade map for FREE! This is great, considering the constantly changing roads in Northern VA due to constructions. One thing I absolute dislike about this unit is the Point of Interest searching feature that is slow and unintuitive. The menu is also not anywhere as intuitive as Garmin, and TomTom.
Ok unit with Horrid customer service. December 8, 2007 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
I purchased this unit because of the TTS (does not work half the time) and real view graphics. This unit works ok but it does not utilize the best route; 3/5 times it took me for ride, I don't this unit knows what is the fastest route it only know "we will get you there soon or later" attitude.
The screen is beautiful and rich but you have to tap the crap out of the screen to register. I have to wonder if this unit even has touch screen.
The POI's included are troublesome, it makes me wonder if all that is out there is McDonalds and Burger King, I don't think the Navigon knows anything else. :(
The biggest gripe I have is the customer service. They lie, and don't show respect to the customer. Talk about rude, I called to inquire about system upgrade and if it is possible in the future to get updates; they answer by saying why do you need an upgrade, you should learn to use the product, there is nothing wrong with it and now you want to tweak it and ruin it. I was like what???? Called back and asked if I can update my software in the future as the company does upgrades, reply" It's future proof, there will be no upgrades and if you need it maybe it's time to replace it with a new one. Asked to talk to a supervisor and they took my contact info, never heard from them. Tried again, and they said there was no record of this request and took my information again, 2 weeks later nothing. I called back and asked to talk to a supervisor, they hung up. Sorry, Navigon, you make a nice looking product that functions somewhat and the customer service you have is the worst, we will move on.
