It's all you need May 14, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This handy GPS is all you need for traveling. You can put it in your pocket after your trip. The battery life is a little short, leave the charger in your car (only the charger). About the software, where Tom-Tom says "turn right" and the competition says "turn right on Mass Av and then in 300 yards turn left" I believe Tom-Tom is better since when you don't know where you're going, you need the information what to do now, not the next three steps of your trip. Besides, the name of the road you're turning into, is displayed on the screen. Their website for Macintosh users (Leopard) could be better, hence the four stars. Other than that, it's beautiful, small and it delivers what it preaches.
TomTom One is an excellent buy. May 13, 2008 This is really a very userfriendly piece. It works in only a minute, no need for user manuals if you're familiar with a touchscreen (who isn't?). It really brings you from door to door. I drove two weeks around in CA and even most of the roads in Yosemite Park were on the screen.
Fantastic bang for your buck! May 13, 2008 I purchased one of these 3rd Edition units for my parents who were about to take a trip. Dad is hard of hearing and reasonably capable on the computer, so I wanted something easy to use with good volume. It worked like a charm and they absolutely love it. Dad can easily hear it while driving, so I can rest a bit easier when they're on the road.
They convinced me to buy one as well. I had some specific needs as I do astronomy research and needed a GPS that would allow me to input latitude and longitude, cross roads, and two waypoints (one for the point on the paved road as a turn-off and the coordinates down the unmarked dirt road as a destination). The Tom Tom is the least expensive unit I found that fit all my needs. It has far more features than some units costing twice as much. It's great at finding satellites and I have yet to lose tracking while on the road. It usually works inside the buildings, too.
The TomTom Home software is nice for updates and uploading voices and more, but actually creating updated maps is a little bothersome. I really wish the software would hook into Google Maps or other imagery so I didn't have to mark each little bend on the touch screen. That's really a minor quibble. My area has lots of new construction and I've created quite a few map updates to match the latest changes.
All-in-all, this is a fantastic little unit loaded with features. I'd highly recommend it!
Works as advertised May 12, 2008 I do not like to deal with devices that require an additional two years of schooling to use, fortunately this is not one of them. It is pretty simple to use but the software installation to use it on line was a problem. I work in I.T. and we use a shared network drive and that is where the program tried to download the updates. Apparently it cannot use a network drive but the error message was very misleading. Took a while to figure it out. But the TOmTom itself is simple to use and appears to be accurate.
Very good basic GPS May 11, 2008 I drive a taxicab here in Cleveland and find this unit very handy for finding addresses that I'm not familiar with and for finding ATM's for out of town visitors. The online upload and download map correction features are great. Some new streets and subdivisions aren't aren't mapped, but I think this is a problem with all brands, but at least with the Tomtom, I know that these omissions will be corrected over time. My other complaint is the route selection is "questionable" at times whether I select the fastest or shortest route. Another nice touch are the free downloadable images and map colors available from the TomTom website.
