4 out of 5 stars Nice for the price   April 7, 2008

After owning a Garmin C340 for over a year, which has been excellent. I have pretty high expectations for a GPS, granted we paid over 400 dollars for the Garmin and the TomTom was 148.

I work in an office complex in a city 30 miles from my home, with all the little streets, zigging and zagging. The TomTom took me right to work. Though it did try to get me to get off the interstate to avoid the turn to the toll highway, I had the avoid toll roads selected. At least I know it will have me avoid the toll roads! My Garmin never did that, it knew that you had to turn off for the toll road. But I deslected avoid toll roads and now it just lets me know there is a toll road. I think it was more me not knowing all the ins and out of the TomTom than the device itself.

I am really happy with the GPS so far. For the price it can't be beat.

Even my Garmin, screwed up every once in a while. No GPS is going to work perfectly everywhere , every time. Seems that allot of people expect perfection from everything, no matter what the price.

4 out of 5 stars The good, the bad ... but no ugly   April 6, 2008

After having returned a TomTom One XL recently, of which you can read the review in Amazon I decided to try again the the TomTom One 3rd edition. I was very pleasantly surprised as it looks similar on the outside, but TomTom has fixed many of the serious problems with the XL version on the inside.

For $130 I am very pleased with this unit. It has the same feels as the XL version, but is night and day superior as the software is more refined to do a better job than the XL.

I don't want run down the feature list, but having owned 5 GPS's so far, this is the best and least expensive one. Buy this, and you'll be very happy.

My biggest complaint is with the design of the street finder. First you enter the city, then the street and then the number. That's fine if you live in one large city where the city name is a constant, but if you live in a city surrounded by smaller cities you may not realize that you're looking for street ABC in city B, but you think it's in City A. You just won't find it. Also, once you've found the street, it would be nice if the system gave the first digit or digits of that street's number. For example, if the street is numbered 4000-4500, it should show 4 as the first digit. That will make it easier to identify the correct street.

I'd like a display option for every street in a state to be shown, or perhaps within x miles of a selected destination city; something like that.

My only niggling complaints are that the charging LED which should change from red to green to show a full battery charge. It just stays green, which at least shows you that is is plugged in. The power cable plug should connect in the right side based on U.S. left hand drive operation, but it connects on the underside. Not a big deal as this is an international product.

On balance, a really nice product. Buy one, you'll like it. There's nothing ugly about this gem.

5 out of 5 stars First time user of GPS   April 6, 2008

Bought the TomTom 3rd edition a month ago after reading lots of reviews and comments by other users. Having never used or seen a GPS being used I was apprehensive about how I would get on. Straight out of the box it was easy! Used it that very day.I would highly recommend this GPS to anyone. I would also recommend the Bracketron friction dash mat which I bought because I read that Minnesota doesn't allow anything mounted on the windscreen. Very pleased with this GPS and the freedom it gives me when I'm on my own with our small children.

4 out of 5 stars Just a low profile GPS   April 6, 2008
A reliable GPS from TOMTOM. Fast recalculation.
Pro: Small, fast, POI, welcome interface
Cons: Battery life too short. No function for fun, like MP3. Maps does not cover every corner, even the information center of Jones Beach. Not Every Road is covered.

The worst is: My GPS is stolen, but the manufacture can not block that device through the registration code. I guess it is not hard for a GPS brand.

4 out of 5 stars Good Product   April 6, 2008

Received the TomTom after 3days and started using it right out of the box. Easy to use, accurate and recalculates quickly. Went to the web site and downloaded upgrades and maps with no issues(XP PRO). Great for navigating, but it won't call out street names. Also has no bluetooth or mp3. These are not issues since I didn't want those features, which also keeps the cost down. Map share works great and so far the POI feature has found what I was looking to find. Can't beat this for the money.
