5 out of 5 stars TOM TOM 3rd edition   January 5, 2008

Finds satelites quicker than the HP PDA/GPS TomTom, must be the newer chip set. I got one on AMZ in Nov.'07 for $149. Seems that any old a/c charger with a mini USB connector will suffice to re-charge the battery, I use the one for my Palm Z22 PDA. For a case, check the rack at any major retailer, 10 bucks should provide a usable alternative to $388 package.

3 out of 5 stars Fast but lacks POIs   January 5, 2008

I have used a Garmin V for the last five (5) years. It's old, LCD, slow, limited memory, but it has ALL the stores, salons, shops with addresses and phone numbers in the maps I loaded, and it get's me there.
My new Tom Tom ONE 3rd Edition is FAST, it's color, it talks to me in a pleasant voice, and it's cheap, but it fails to get me where I want to go. It can't find my office, my barbershop, and 7 other shops that I frequent, and that's just since Christmas (10 days ago). They don't appear to be in the POI database. I mark my location at work, but it can't navigate there because there is no ROAD in the parking lot; I have to backtrack to the closest road. Never had such problems with my old, ugly, Garmin.

3 out of 5 stars Great Hardware - Terrible Software   January 4, 2008

The tomtom one 3rd edition I got for Christmas works great. A perfect little device for finding your way around. However, as a mac user I am used to things simply working and the mac software for the tomtom simply doesn't work. It was able to recognize the tomtom once connected, but beyond that... nothing. I purchased a new voice and downloaded it to the tomtom home software. It wouldn't install. After two frustrating emails back and forth with tomtom tech support, I tried to call. The line was actually busy, yes, busy for more than an hour worth of trying. Finally, after another hour of trying to find additional web support, I got through on the phone. However, even the tomtom tech could not get the downloaded voice to install. I removed the tomtom home software and re-installed it, deleted files all with the tech support help, and it still wouldn't install the voice. The tomtom tech actually told me that if this last tip didn't work that the only way to install the voice was to switch to a pc for my connection. Brilliant! I was finally directed to another website that walked through a manual file transfer that did the trick. However, the long and short of it is... the mac tomtom home software does not work. I am told by tomtom that a mac update is coming up early in 2008. Let's hope so, otherwise, from my point of view, the tomtom home software for mac, is worthless.

5 out of 5 stars Cannot get to load on computer   January 4, 2008

We just purchased the gps. Seems alright but I cannot get it to even come on my computer screen to load TomTom Home. Neither XP or Vista will work. Does anyone know how to get it to load? Instructions are simple enough. Thanks.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing - switching to Garmin   January 3, 2008

The maps are severely outdated (a major road that was completed over three years ago doesn't exist on this unit, but does exist on Garmin's preloaded map in the Nuvi 200 series), the unit is not easily removable from the suction mount, and the nav voice warns you to NOT get off at EVERY exit on the interstate. "Keep left" at every exit (especially when the exits are frequent) really gets old fast. Finally, and most importantly, the unit only guided to the correct destination on one of the first three addresses it was given.
