3 out of 5 stars A Good Compass   June 23, 2008

I have used it for several weeks now in areas that I travel frequently and know the various routes. Regardless of how you configure it, it seldom comes up with the short or fastest route. Yesterday I traveled to an address in Algonquin Illinois that has existed for over 100 years. The TomTom could not find any valid address in the three-block strip of Jefferson St., probably the oldest part of town. I tried using it in downtown Chicago but it seemed to have great difficulty knowing where I was. I imagine this is due to the tall buildings and the elevated railway. I don't have much confidence in its ability in navigate though tall buildings. It does seem to know where it is when rural but there are many cross roads that are not named until you actually begin to travel on to them.
I have used a Garmin and they work much the same. The TomTom is easy to use and will probably get you where you want to go eventually. The E.T.A. feature is very inaccurate. You can be 10 miles from your destination, traveling on a two-lane highway with a 55 M.P.H. speed limit and no stops and it will estimate the travel time at 26 minutes, more then double the actual time it will take. As you get closer, it will continue to double the remaining travel time until you get within several hundred yards.
The compass feature seems to work well.

4 out of 5 stars TOM TOM   June 23, 2008

We used the tomtom one, 3rd edition on a 6000 mile road trip through the west U.S. It was very good in urban settings. In the remote rural areas it sometimes became confused. In one instance it told us to turn where no road had ever existed because it was a canyon. In Demmings NM it directed us to the gates of a state prison after we had selected a motel from the menue. It is a fun tool to use but one still needs good old common sense and a back up of an atlas.

2 out of 5 stars poor route selection and horrible time estimation   June 23, 2008

I've had this for about 6 months, it has taken me to enough wrong roads and horrible routes, I don't even believe what it is says. Compare the routes it plans to something like google maps, they are never as direct and always through more congested areas. It is very biased to major interstates. And I don't know how it calculates travel time, but it must be based on speeds from an 85 yr old. It estimated 60 mins for me to travel 30 miles on roads that were 50-65 mph in speed and maybe 2 traffic lights.

On the positive side, the interfaces are very easy to use. A bigger screen would be better, but then it would cost wouldn't be so good. The on-line updates should help, but almost always have upload problems.

5 out of 5 stars excellent product   June 22, 2008
Wow. What a great product. I'm very happy with the One, 3rd Edition. Very intuitive and user-friendly. Points of interest are very handy and easy to use. I love this thing and would not be able to do my job without it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Toy   June 21, 2008
I bought this for my hubby and he loves me even more now. Seriously, he loves this new toy. And besides being fun to listen to and to watch, it has even proven to be very helpful
