TomTom One Navigator - - - Get one. February 4, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a well made, quality product that does all that is advertised and much more. I have not actually made a long trip with it as yet, but have made short trial runs and am amazed how much it has programed into it. It has a built in compass showing travel direction. It shows "atomic" clock time from the satellite. Your vehicle speed is shown in MPH on the display and can be set to sound a signal at any set speed. The daytime display is bright enough to see under most conditions and is adjustable. The night display is excellent and blends in with most instrument panel lights. The variety of voices is limited and I found the male voice to have the most clarity over road noises. Other reviewers have complained about it wanting you to make U-turns and take alternate routes. This will happen if you are near a highway and you have selected "fastest route" from the menu. If you prefer secondary roads, then select "shortest route" from the menu. Also be selective in showing too much information on your route. Too many gas stations, motels, etc.etc. will actually obliterate the road on the display. The menu of features is too varied to describe here, so the first thing I would recommend is to go on line and print out the manual, at least pages 1 through 34. The TomTom One, 3rd Edition, was highly rated by a leading consumer magazine and I think it will be a very useful addition to your vehicle. On closing, if you find it difficult to find a satisfactory place to position the suction cup mount, look in to the "Nav-Mat" holder available through Amazon. This is a donut shaped beanbag with a flat center and rubberized bottom to allow placement most anywhere on the dashboard. Safe journeys!
Best GPS Ever February 4, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I just love this GPS it is a real darling. I had to change some of the defaults to get the results that I needed. One of the options I had to select was plan fastest route. Once I did this the GPS consistently selected the quickest routes. Nice to download all of the latest map updates for free.
Good starter GPS February 1, 2008 It's sleek and easy to use. The maps are 95% accurate. I think the 5% would improve if I sync it with my computer. My unit does not connect to the satellite immediately. It needs to wait about 2 minutes for it to get going. My friend has the same unit and she doesn't have any problems with it. I haven't investigated this issue further since it doesn't really bother me. I'll try to upgrade the firmware to version 2 and see what happens to it. It does not have the text-to-speech function (pronouncing the street names), bluetooth and the screen is a bit small. If you want a fancier GPS, stay away from this. Overall, this is a great "bare bones" GPS under $150. If you are paying more than $150, you might as well get the deluxe version.
TomTom One Third Ed. 3.5" Portable GPS January 29, 2008 I bought this popular gadget for my son. Although this GPS was one of the basic, least expensive models (around Xmas time), it serves the purpose and works well. Its screen is very clear and, I believe, TomTom is a good brand. Last December, this item was sold out in the stores in my area and on back order with Amazon.com, but it was shipped to us sooner than anticipated. Bravo for the service! Note to Amazon: UPS should not be allowed to leave parcels of a certain value on top of the letterbox at the end of a driveway; they should be delivered to the house door.
Maps not very accurate, not much map detail January 25, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Overall works pretty well, but has some problems and I prefer the Garmin nuvi 200. Though no GPS is perfect.
In comparison to the 200, this model:
+ Finds satellites much quicker, and can sometimes even find them when indoors. + More accurately knows your current position. The 200 sometimes has to guess, and may place you in the wrong spot on the map, then jump to the proper place when it figures out where you really are. + Lets you customize the usage of space on the bottom of the screen. (Choose which info shows there) But still doesn't have good options to use the whole screen, or almost the whole screen, for the map.
- For where I drive (big U.S. city) has less accurate maps, including a few strange errors such as where streets don't seem to connect. - Does not allow as much map detail on the screen. I much prefer the 200 for this. - Not as nice a setup to mount to windshield, in my opinion. - Thicker unit, when removed from mounting plastic. - Does not allow a "via point" when routing. - No SD card slot.
