I researched 2 days before the purchase.
This has all the functions that you use in the car, without unnecessary stuff.
1) Text speech-to-Street is a must, and this unit has it. There is a huge difference between "turn left" and "turn left in the fifth ave, and this unit tells you the street name. This is one of recent model so 2) design is slim and cool. 3) It has good battery life, too. It also have a function to simulate your route on the unit. When I travel to the complicated area, I use this simulator before I leave to get familiar with the route. You can even change icons using web, so my Garmin 260 has "American Jack" (male) voice and vehecle icon is an american football. You have to pay additional dollar, but I strongly recommend you to buy friction dashboard mount (with this, you don't have to attach it to the window using suction, letting the whole world to know you own GPS). Arriving at my destination, I simply remove from the portable mount and carry it within my purse (It is smaller than your palm). When my husband use it, he puts Garmin 260 next to him along with coffee mug, and he just listens to direction, without looking to the screen. In that case, wide screen is not worth to pay extra money. I bought both AC connector and car charger, but having a car charger is enough. I hope this helps.

5 out of 5 stars Garmin 260   May 6, 2008
We have two new luxury cars (different manufactures) with navigation systems. The Garmin 260 is easier to use than either one of the factory units. It is easy to enter a destination and it easy to follow the verbal instructions. The POI function is better than the factory units. I bought the Garmin to use in rental cars, but often use it as a backup for the factory units.Garmin nüvi 260 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

5 out of 5 stars Garmin Nuvi   May 5, 2008
I replaced a Magellan Roadmate with this Garmin Nuvi at about the same price. There is no comparasion. The Garmin is a superior unit. Very easy to operate and contains significantly more data. Easy to get on and off the dashboard mount. Just very intuitive.

Received my 260 two weeks ago and this is one fine piece of equipment for your car (or walking around for that matter). I researched Consumer Reports online and every place I could think of to find a GPS unit that was just a GPS unit and had text-to-speech so I wouldn't have to look at the screen. The 260 is the closest I could come because it does have a photo album feature but at least it doesn't play music.
On trips to unknown places my Saint of a Wife would get dreadfully nervous with my looking at the [...] printout while I was driving and eating a burger and cleaning up the cola I had just spilled on the carpet - all at the same time. I still don't understand what made her nervous, I've never had a wreck but she has.
For the last two weeks since I received the 260 and ripped it outta the box and proceeded to throw the manual away (you really don't need it) I have put this device through its paces. I've deliberately tried to fool it by turning on the wrong street and within seconds it calculates a new route to the destination. I can't fool it so I suppose that would make the Garmin nuvi 260 Foolproof.
I'm back at Amazon tonight to buy another one, it's that good.
For those who might think they need to buy an AC charger, if you have a Motorola phone the AC charger cable on that will charge the unit and it already comes with a power adapter for the car. Many camera USB cables will work on it just fine to connect it to your computer.
In short I would recommend this unit to anyone - especially anyone who doesn't want an MP3 player or a portable piano with their GPS unit.
Go ahead - punch in those credit card numbers and move on with your life. You'll use much less Xanax with the Garmin nuvi 260.

Just talked to their customer service, they DON'T give free map upgrade to any previous purchase even within 1 day old. They just guarantee new maps when purchased. Without a map upgrade in a fast road changing area, it should be good to go to junkyard in a year.
