Excellent buy! February 11, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
After quite a lot of research, I purchased a nuvi 260. I wanted one that would speak the street names. This really helps in knowing when to turn.I have found it to do everything I needed in a portable GPS. It is very intuitive to use and gets me to where I want to go. I am very happy with my purchase and would recommend it as the best without the frills.
Good value but some challenges February 10, 2008 I've owned this since December 2007. It's been used roughly 3-4 days a week and for local and long distance travel. Doesn't find businesses by names on occasion and you must type the numerical address instead. Doesn't find subdivisions that are about a yr old or so nor streets created since about then. It is self-updating so not an issue a user can overcome independently. A feature I like is that it has "favorites" so you can store restaurants, merchants and get around vacation spots with ease instead of relying on maps. The voice is adjustable volume and gender. The display is sufficient (but you shouldn't be looking at it while driving) :o) I would buy this product again. Although the biggest problem is getting lesser populated areas recognized, it's proven itself to be a very useful tool for traveling.
Wonderful tool for parents! February 10, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this for Christmas for my parents who have just moved from Connecticut to Florida. They have a little social group they are involved with, but other than that feel intimidated getting around with known reprecussions such as getting lost (they don't want to be at each others' throats because one wouldn't stop at the service station for directions & they hate the thought of dragging maps around everywhere). This was just what they needed! They are so happy with it. I was worried that maybe I should have gotten one with a widescreen since they both have minor eyesight issues, but I deliberately picked one that voiced the turns including street names loud and clear. They have been having no problems and said it was simple to use right out of the box. I told them about the "Places of Interest" and how to use them to find restaurants, entertainment, gas stations, anything they may desire and they are thrilled with it. My dad particularly thought it was amusing how the woman's voice sounds so annoyed when you are familiar with an area so you make a shortcut of your own. She'll say recalculating, recalculating, recalculating & then give you the new route but sound a little ticked off, he says (my father is a sort of a wiseguy). I am very happy with my investment. It made no errors in its routing, is easy to program, has a simple interface, the technology is not too complicated. When I first began to research these things (GPS units) I thought you had to pay for a monthly subscription to use them, but that isn't true. They are all free to use....it is whether of not you want to add extras such as up-to-the-minute traffic services, etc. that you would have to pay for. I'm sure some people have an opinion about those, but I think they are unecessary because if you come upon a problem and turn the corner, the unit will reroute you if you have it set on "shortest route to destination" anyway. I think this is a great gift to give to someone who isn't too old to get around but maybe hesitant to go places without a guide. It gives you confidence that you might otherwise not have to venture out on your own and I think that makes this an outstanding product.
GPS with an attitude! February 9, 2008 I got this for my daughter for Christmas and we took a run with it that day. It was clear and accurate, but when we took a different route than it wanted, you could hear the irritation in it's voice when it said "recalculating". I loved it! It doesn't talk too much, just when it's time to change direction.
