Garmin 260 nuvi June 11, 2008 We purchased the Garmin 260 Nuvi 2 weeks before we left on a cross country vacation. After traveling over 4000 miles, we can say without a doubt, that for the money, this GPS did everything we could have asked of it. When we got off the beaten path, it gave us the easiest way back. We kept finding hidden features we didn't know it had, and every one of them were easy to access. I would recommend this model to anyone who is a first time buyer, or who have a system they don't like.
Garmin's Great! June 11, 2008 I absolutely love it! The Garmin nuvi 260 gave me the confidence to travel anywhere I want now.
Take a map June 11, 2008 This is a pretty fair and easy to use unit.It is also not always accurate. We went on a trip from Mi to Mo and we like to go via Indianapolis,so we had to ignore the garmin wanting us to go the 80 94 route, which was no big deal. This is not the problem we encountered though. The nuvi wanted to take us through Indianapolis and this would not of been to bad but it took us through the middle of town and also wanted us to turn the wrong way on a one way street. It put us finally on I 40 instead of I 70 and took us through a lot of stop lights. It ended up adding time to our route. This was on the fast route setting. We know a better way around and through by a McNally map but I wanted to see what this would do.Other than this it was pretty accurate but you might want to check a map for backup if you are going on a trip to somewhere new.
This is the one! June 10, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought my first GPS more than 5 years ago - a Magellan 700 and paid near $1300. I have had a fair amount of experience using a GPS and when my Magellan started acting up on a recent trip I immediately started my research & within a few days decided to try the new Garmin nuvi 260. After paying top dollar for my original GPS I wasn't sure I'd like the Garmin. I was dead wrong! Granted, over the past few years all GPS makers have improved their models even though prices have come down but I can tell you first hand that the 260 is a no nonsense GPS that grabs the satellite signal quickly, & has a great data base, as well as a super easy to use interface. It has text to speech prompts that warn you in plenty of time when to make turns etc. and it is fun to use. I made up my mind that I wasn't going to spend an arm and a leg as I did the first time around and for the price I paid for the 260 and seeing the quality of this GPS I am very pleased. I do not need bluetooth,MP3, or audio books and other features in a GPS so if you need those features look elsewhere. However if you want to be able to go from point A to point B without aggrevation and simple elegance the 260 is the one. The price point of this unit makes it a steal and the size of the unit makes it super easy to slip into your pocket or bag when you fly somewhere and are going to rent a car or if you go into an eatery and don't care to leave it in the car!
Gets me from point A to B :) June 10, 2008 When researching a GPS I was looking for something simple to get me where I needed to go. I didn't need any bells & whistles, no MP3 or Bluetooth capability - just something to guide me along my way.
During my research the Garmin Nuvi 260 rose to the top of the list. The unit is compact, ultra portable, has a rechargeable battery and does text to speech (announces street names, as opposed to just saying "turn left in 300 feet").
The Nuvi 260 is easy to operate, and makes entering destinations or setting 'favorites' a breeze. The audible directions are a bit robotic, but are easy on the ears and the Garmin website offers plenty of options for downloading additional voices. I've also downloaded additional icons for the vehicle on the map for free from the Garmin website.
The unit has been working flawlessly for though there have been a few times where it was slow to get a signal. I don't know if that is the fault of the unit or the area I was in, but I ended up having to just drive down the street a bit until it was able to figure out where it was and get me home.
My only gripe with the unit is that it lacks the ability to display general icons on the map. For instance there is no way to have it display icons for all gas stations on the road, but it can show you a list of ones along with their distance from your current location. It's really only a minor complaint for me, and was only pointed out by my mother in law who wanted to be able to display all Dunkin Donut locations on her map while driving. I searched the manual and on-line for the option of how to turn that on but couldn't find it - however if it is available please let me know how to do it.
For the price, the Nuvi 260 will do you well. It provides excellent navigation which is exactly what I was looking for. The unit is extremely portable and can fit right in your jacket pocket. It even has the ability to switch navigation from automobile, pedestrian and cycling.
