My first GPS device October 12, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this Garmin Nuvi 760 GPS beginning of September 08 just before a trip to New Mexico. This is my first GPS device, so like thousands of other buyers, I did struggle to find the right device for my use at the right price. I wanted more than the GPS feature because I wanted to combine the bluetooth phone connection along with the FM transmitter in order to get the sound into the car speakers sound system. I do a lot of conference calls in my car driving to work and thought this might be much more confortable than wearing the ear piece. One more useful feature was also of course the mp3 player since I do not own an ipod !!! I read a lot of reviews concerning the FM transmitter feature which disappointed me and made me think I would never find a working device. Well, now , let's get to how all these things work. - GPS : Very good , it did mislead me twice in new mexico in one week, but was not a problem since I knew where I was going !!! Don't know if this is because the map was not updated or if the distances where it made a mistake were too small ( hundred feet , no more ... ). I have not used the GPS function extensively enough to be able to say if it is perfect or not. Overall, it works great enough for a simple user like me. - MP3 : works great, user interface is pretty nice and very user friendly. only issue, it took me a while before I could setup the device to play the songs in a continuous way. So for few hours , I had to pre select the songs one after the other, it was painful. Now it works great . ( the truth is that I did not take time to read the manual !!! hopefully, you won't do the same mistake ). I am using a 1GB SD card. plenty of songs to listen to. - Bluetooth : I connected it to a blackberry phone. worked the first time when I did set them up. Now they both devices are in auto detect mode . they recognize each other as soon as I get into the car. takes 5 to 10 seconds though before they connect and you can make a phone call. So do not jump into your car and dial in imediatly. will not work so fast. - FM transmitter : I finally made it to work !!! yeahhhh !!! honestly, finding the right frequency with your car radio is a challenge. It depends on what receiver you have in your radio. I tried in 2 different cars, and in both car , the frequency you can lock to might be different. When you are successful finding the right frequency, it works great . The sound out of the speakers is great ( I have a good sound system in my car ) , it is very clear and soft. Conference calls are a pleasure. So is the sound when you also play the mp3 songs. ( remember, this is only when you find the right frequency !!! so good luck ). One issue noted though when using bluetooth with this sound system, not from me, but from the other person I get on the phone, is a pretty annoying noise on the line which makes the person talking wanting to hang up .. ( could be good in some cases !! :-) ) One more issue with the FM transmitter is that the "golden" frequency you have finally locked in , will not work all the way to your destination in case of a long trip .... There will be interferences on the way, sometimes , there will be some radio stations emitting at the dame frequency you have chosen and will disturb your reception .... when this happens, it is a pain , because there is no way you can play again at finding a new frequency while driving ... then your mp3 player becomes useless !!! and you better disconnect the FM transmitter if you still want to hear the cute voice coming out of your GPS giving you directions. Well, if you are lucky to have an Auxiliary input into your car radio system, then you do not have to worry about this FM transmitter, you will be in heaven !!! :-) because you can connect the output of your Nuvi directly to your radio.
Overall : GPS : great for my use Bluetooth : Works great MP3 : works great as long as you can get the sound out of your speakers. FM transmitter : Work well only when you are lucky to get the right frequency. Not all the time.
Garmin 760 nuvi October 10, 2008 I've been using this for about a month now. It's been an invaluable aid to navigation in that time, as I recently moved to a new area.
The heart of the GPS is its direction finding capability. It gives clear, concise directions, which are also displayed on the map, as well as spoken. The directions have not yet been wrong, although they may not always give you the route that you would normally think to use if you knew the way. The only problem I have seen is that when inputting an address for the GPS to find for you, it tends to undershoot the exact address. It's not a problem, as when I went looking for a specific address, I ended up so close that I could find the store on my own. You can later input the exact location as a favorite and name it so that it doesn't happen again.
Some side features that are useful follow. The distance to the next turn or waypoint is always displayed on the bottom right, and pushing that will bring up more information about your route. Your ETA is displayed in the bottom left (using speed limits for calculation, so stopping at a red or speeding will change the time), pushing on that will give you information about your driving (speed, avg speed, max speed, distance traveled, etc). Finally, it has both an internal memory and an SD card slot for mp3s, locations, etc. I haven't used the bluetooth, so I can't comment on that. The traffic locator I don't find too useful with so little traffic here, but it does tell me when I should expect a problem, and the GPS allows me to detour to avoid.
nuvi 760 October 10, 2008 This gps unit is very easy to use and is packed with features. The screen is fantastic. The only things that I do not like so far is that the FM modulator could be better. Sound quality is not good at all and it cannot see many of the songs I put on the sd card. Also, the suction cup that the unit mounts to is quite week and tends to fall off especially when there is temperature change. This being said, the main function of the gps is to guide you from one point to another. In this area the 760 excels.
Great GPS October 9, 2008 Purchased this unit as a refurbished. I would have never known. Shipping was fast and the price was great. Only issue I have is now the nuvi 765 is now out and I could use the actual lane navigation assistance at times. Great product!
Good but could use better user instructions October 9, 2008 Works well but takes a long time to figure out all the functions. Make sure to reguister it online and get the new maps download for free. I would but it again. Also I have the Navmat to hold it, bought it on newegg.com for less that 10 dollars.
