4 out of 5 stars Very Good Product   June 8, 2008

In my opinion the Garmin nuvi 750 GPS Navigator is technically top of the line. It is very easy to use and has been very accurate in guiding me to my desired destinations. The price and delivery service was excellent.

The negatives were not of major significance but should be corrected by Garmin soon. I had a problem after the downloading of the 2009 upgrade of the USA City Map. The download manager used by Garmin to DL & install the S/W caused a slow down (lockup) of my Dell DXPS 1GB 2.8 Ghz whenever I tried to access the DL'd files (the nuvi worked ok though). I had to uninstall the Garmin files (1.5 GB) and the DL mnrg (2.5 GB!) to use my computer effectively.
Also, Garmin did not indicate that a s/w package (MapSource / DVD) for interfacing the computer with the nuvi was available. An email to customer service provided that s/w though.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Product With One Drawback   June 7, 2008

The Garmin Nuvi 750 is an excellent product and outperforms a built in GPS I had in a previous vehilcle. I chose the 750 because I have a pre installed Bluetooth system.

I find the unit to be very responsive and accurate. After the first few times, it located the satalites in an acceptable amount of time, one minute or less. It even locates satalite signals in my home. I do recommend checking the Garmin website for updated downloads. These are very benificial and will enhance the performance of the unit.

I have not use all of the features yet, but the POI is very useful as well as the voice response calling out the street names. My last GPS did not have that feature and it makes a big difference, especially in an unfamiliar area.

This brings me to the one drawback. The volume of the voice response is not loud enough. (for me) I have all of the 750 volume settings on max, but it can be difficult to hear the instructions, especially if you have the radio or Ipod playing. You can play it through your vehicle speaker system, but if you do, you cannot listen to the radio etc. Perhaps Garmin can increase the volume or come up with another fix with a future download update.

All in all, this is a fine GPS system and will certainly get you where you're going. I highly recommend it and while you're at it, get the Portable Friction Dashboard Mount. It works great.

4 out of 5 stars Pleased, with one caveat   June 7, 2008
As usual, I made my choice using a Consumer Reports rating, and for the most part I'm pleased with the purchase. This unit appears to do almost everything it's supposed to. It's operation is intuitive, so I was able to use it without the manual. I have one complaint, however. I was excited for its ability to play MP3's in the car via its FM transmitter but, alas, it is BOGUS! I tried it with the car stereo, and several radios around the house. It's useless. It's easy to tune in the signal, but it's lost with the slightest change of position. Hey, Garmin: If a feature is inadequate, don't bother! Having said that, I recommend the Garmin 750 nuvi to anyone who doesn't need the MP3 player.

3 out of 5 stars Great interface, poor navigation   June 7, 2008

Without consulting the manual, anyone who has used an ATM could access the major features of this device. The spoken street names and destinations are a great innovation which effectively eliminate much of the confusion and guesswork associated with using a GPS. However, for the best navigation results you owe it to yourself to look elsewhere. For a few years I used an older iGuidance package on my PDA which, despite lacking all the bells and whistles, did a much more accurate job than the Garmin at calculating routes. I hope to be clear: Any GPS system can, on occasion, provide misleading directions. They are a tool, not a replacement for competent driving. The Garmin will get you to your destination and in an unfamiliar location is far preferable to being lost. It just will not get you to a given destination in the most time efficient way. You have two major choices in Settings: Quickest or Shortest, and options to exclude toll-roads, u-turns, ferries and other such obstacles. I live in a major metropolitan area of Southern California and have had the opportunity to test the unit in both local errands and extended day trips, on familiar and unfamiliar roads. I can say unequivocally that in no case has the Garmin correctly identified either the quickest or the shortest paths, using any combination of local streets or major highways. In one case, using the Quickest setting, it bypassed a major interstate (which I had just used to reach the destination) and sent me on a jaunt down a two lane backcountry road with multiple four-way stops, extending my return trip by forty minutes. As this is one of Garmin's top-of-the-line units, one has to assume that it represents the best navigation algorithm Garmin has to offer. I am disappointed in this unit. (2.5 stars)

4 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect   June 5, 2008
The Garmin Nuvi 750 in general is a very good GPS except the followings:
1, The direction is sometime a little too slow. For example when it tells you to turn, it happened after you have almost across the intersection and too late turn turn.
2, the rechargeable battery only list less than two hours, it's too short.
3, try to get message thru FM radio is almost importable. the transmitting signal is too weak.

The mp3 player function with memory card function is good for long distant driving but the built in speaker is not good. You need somehow use cable to connect to car radio for better sounding.
