Works Perfect September 19, 2008 I have this unit for a month now. Upgraded the firmware to 4.60 after reading many reviews and has been perfect so far. Locks on to satellites fast. Route calculation is accurate. My Motorolla Razr listed in the shortcuts connect every time without any hassle i.e I don't have to go through pairing process like some have complained. I Have not had any freezes or resets so far. But then again, I have had the unit for only a month. I will see how it functions over a period of time. For now it is functioning OK and the price was right at amazon. I am happy with this purchase.
With Free map Upgrade, the deal is even sweeter... September 19, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As of now, FYI if your Magellan is less than 30 days you automatically qualify for a free map upgrade (magellan 2008/2009), which costs about $80.00. I called Magellan customer service as soon as I read a review posted on Monday Sep 15, regarding someone getting a free update. When I called, I just mentioned the free upgrade for units purchased within 30 days and they automatically pulled up my info (Therefore you gotta make sure you register your unit online with Magellan) and they told me I qualify. After that they made write down some information and told me to either e-mail or fax them a receipt or receipt of purchase. I did so and within an hour I got a called from another Magellan representatve who verified my information and only charged me a $10.00 shipping charge for FEDEX shipping. I checked a couple hours later and Magellan had already e-mail me a valid FedEd tracking number.
Rgarding the Magellan 4250, the unit is great, it has some flaws but after I made the software upgrade, which is available from the Magellan website, the unit became flawless. I has it's normal detours to routes you would't take on a daily basis to conmute, but I tried a Garmin 760 and a Tom Tom 930 and they all took the same route.
The navteq maps (2008/2009) are the same as the maps displayed in google maps. So if you want to check and address to see if it's loaded in your magellan, just check in google maps it's just the same database.
The voice commands are very simple, nothing too fancy, but in reality, how often you need to use the voice commands?, I only use them to reroute, to cancel a route or to find a POI.
The interface is easy to use and foolproof. Best decision, I've ever made...
I want one for my own September 18, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I had the pleasure of dealing with this unit when my grandparents bought one and needed someone to give them a tutorial (I have no idea why they picked me, seeing as I don't own one). Physically, the size is very nice, it is thin but does not feel cheap, can easily be slipped into a pocket or purse. Theirs came with a neat suction bracket that can be adjusted several different ways, up and down as well as side-to-side. It was so easy to setup with their home address and a few others to get them started. It does not have their street, but they are close to a major state road. I liked that you can select one of four routes (quickest time, shortest distance, most/least freeway) for your destination. POIs are plentiful and could be super handy if you are in an unfamiliar area and hungry or low on gas. They did not sign up for the traffic updates free trial, but that is a nice option to have. I have put one on my Christmas list so I can be as cool as my grandparents.
Megellan 4250 GPS September 16, 2008 This works great and it makes it easy to get to hard to find destinations. Also, it was the best price on the internet.
Unit works well, newer maps should be included at no charge! September 15, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I've been using my new Magellan 4250 for about 2 weeks. I can't complain about the functionality, I upgraded it to the 4.60 firmware and it seems to be working just fine & functions just as I would expect it to. But I'm really upset that Magellan as a company would sell this as a brand new unit and intentionally NOT include the newest updated maps with the unit! Instead they want to sell the updated maps *seperately* for $79.95 as if they are some sort of a "deluxe accessory" you can get if you're willing to pay the extra $$ -- COME ON MAGELLAN - WHAT KIND OF BS IS THIS??!! This is a total ripoff to not include the most updated maps with the unit, or at the very least you should make them a free download! I mean come on -- if I buy a brand new car it doesn't get sold to me with tires that are 10 years old!! I was not very pleased at all, for instance, to discover that my neighborhood and the very street that I live on appears on my 4250 as nothing more than a big green field due to the outdated maps in the unit.
SO, BUYER BEWARE --- IF YOU BUY THIS GPS BE AWARE THAT YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY AN EXTRA $80.00 ON TOP OF WHAT YOU PAID FOR THE UNIT ITSELF *IF* YOU WANT TO HAVE THE MOST CURRENT AND UPDATED MAPS!
Call me naive, but I think Magellan should have grow some ethics & actually include the *newest* maps with the *newest* units rather than trying to skin their customers after they've already bought the unit.
2 stars: Good functionality, unethical company
