I didn't end up getting this item from Amazon June 16, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am writing this short review because Amazon keeps sending me the email even though I ended up cancelling this order.
I ordered this item through Amazon but when I didn't get any shipping information after a few days, I called to get the status of my order. When I called I found out that the item was on backorder and would not be available for several weeks (if that). I was extremely irritated that neither Amazon or the company (Tiger Direct) bothered to inform me that the item was on backorder. If I hadn't called myself, I would have never known. For that reason, I cancelled my order with Amazon and got my GPS directly from another company.
In regards to the actual item, so far - so good. It often doesn't realize where I am currently located because it seems to assume that I am at my home address when I instruct it to Map from My Current Position. The POI locator doesn't always find the closest place to my current position either or even if when I put in the addres where I am at. I'm not sure but I may have to update my maps and other items (POIs). Also, I find that the volume is too low and it can be hard to hear if someone in the car is talking, if the windows are open or even if the air conditioner is running. It's okay but it definitely could be better.
very disapointed June 16, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am very disappointed with this GPS. I bought it in part for the large point of interest data base. The POI shows places that have been gone for 10 to 15 years. There is a McDonald's near me that has been there about 20 years and doesn't show up. My friend bought a Medion at Aldi that has much more up to date POI with company logos on the map.
The Magellan is also hard to understand many times when it pronounces names. Although its routes are reasonably accurate (i have had it tell me I have arrived at my destination at least 1000 feet early) You would not get there by following the voice directions since it will sometime display a turn or two on the map but not mention it in the voice directions.
Some road info has been outdated for 3 years June 15, 2008 Although it has the "ability" to display its current track on a nearby road while it is actually on a different road, there are still chances to let people find out that some road information such as roads have been moved or redesigned interstate junctions are outdated. I already noticed a couple of these kind of problems. Yet there is no map update available. Therefore, I still print maps from online map service like I used to do just in case.
Support is horrible June 14, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Ok I had a 4050 which doing an update from the website messed it up, they replaced it with a 4250 which proceeded to stop picking up signals, sent it for repair they scratched the LCD, they decided to replace it with a REFURBISED unit Oh yeah all of this happens in a 5 month period
Voice command useless to me June 11, 2008 I bought the Magellan Roadmate 3000T after using "Hertz Never Lost" in a car rental about three years ago. I travel across the U.S. for work, so needless to say, I was instantly hooked. After using it over two years I sold it on Ebay and bought this model. I believe the most signifigant operational improvement is the live traffic re-routing feature. I got a year subscription free when I bought the unit. Other than that this unit is nearly the same GPS as the less expensive model. On the plus side, the extra "bells and whistles" are nice! The larger screen is great. Also, the light sensor that changes the on screen background from green to black at night is almost worth the cost alone, in the safety it provides. This feature nearly eliminates the annoying and potentially dangerous dots in my field of vision from stealing glimpses at the screen at night. The Points of interest feature has also proved to be an invaluable timesaver. It even saves gas, as I don't have to drive around a strage area loooking for food, gas, etc.
All in all, I am happy with the unit. My constructive criticism would be for the designers to implement a better use for the voice command function...it's virtually useless in its current application. I do like having it as a gadget I can show off to friends that are nterested in electronics. I also do not like the delay in re-routing on this unit compared to the 3000T. I suppose the traffic feature is to blame for this, but it is a small price to pay for getting the benefit of avoiding traffic. Other than these small annoyances, I would reccommend this unit to anyone.
