4 out of 5 stars my trip   May 27, 2008

It worked very well except in a couple of places. I found it very useful for finding markets, attractions and atm's.

3 out of 5 stars long way around   May 27, 2008

I might have to get used to this, but we took a trip the REALLY long way around thanks to Magellan!!! We should have gone a straight shot on a local highway (we asked for highways) and it took us surface streets and added 45 minutes to the trip....It seems to be slick, but I will have to get used to it.

5 out of 5 stars Great GPS unit with lots of features for less money comparable units   May 27, 2008
I have been using this Magellan 4250 GPS unit for about a month. Magellan gives you more great features for your money. I have picked out a few features that I have love the most. First the voice command is very nice it allows me to keep my eyes on the road and my hands on the wheel. I also love the detour option that allows me to get around traffic ahead. The Bluetooth connectivity is also great and works well allowing you to talk hands free on your cell phone. The last feature I will write about is the Point of Interest (POI). We found everything from places to eat to state parks to camp at overnight. I could go on and on about many more features but I won't. The 4250 is one of the coolest GPS units I have used in years. It is worth every cent.

2 out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTING   May 25, 2008

I purchased this from Amazon as an upgrade to my Garmin c330 which I had for about 3 years. I am returning the Magellan after 2 days of operation and buying another Garmin for the following reasons:

a. The unit 'froze' on my second use of it and the reset button would not 'unfreeze' it. I had to wait for the internal battery to discharge before it worked correctly. Just as well I was going somewhere I knew the directions for.

b. It takes nearly 3 times longer than the Garmin to recalculate a rerouting if you take a wrong turn.

c. The Garmin disconnects from its power supply on removing it from the mounting bracket. With the Magellan, you have to remove 2 connectors, in addition to removing it from its bracket before the unit becomes 'portable'.

d. The power connector and the antenna connector come out of the unit somewhat untidily from the top right hand corner of the unit.

e. The colors used for features on the maps, e.g. roads, compass, and land are in pastel shades which makes it hard to read in bright conditions. The Garmin was sitting beside the Magellan on the dash and was MUCH easier to read. The Magellan would be unusable in a convertible vehicle.

In the Magellan's favour, it is a neat and slim unit.

3 out of 5 stars Get something cheaper   May 24, 2008

Of course my last GPS was stolen. My work offered to pay for this one and I'm glad they did. I have the latest Firmware.

Pros: For my work, the two huge pros are, it gives you your current speed (my vehicle speedometer is off 3%) and it gives zip codes for where you are in one tap. The rest is pretty standard. The POS setup is nice, clear display. Other than that, it's more then most people would need.

Cons: Power cord from the car doesn't fit snug. The mounting bracket is a joke because it's lack of maneuverability. Switching from screen to screen is tricky because you can't tell if you didn't tap hard enough or if it's thinking. The display dim feature is horrid. There is no flexibility within the GUI that can make it more user friendly. It's not very user friendly. The AAA feature, phone feature and such should be switchable to other short-cuts. Most everything on the display should fade after 30 seconds and reappear after a tap. There is no short cut to features such as Trip or map. Also, the load time for the "maneuvers," is pathetically slow and reloads every time you tap it. The other massive problem is; While driving down 95 it'll tell you 5.6 miles and go straight. You're still on 95, so why tell me NOT to turn, just tell me the turns. There were about 50 times on 95 it told me to go straight. So I never knew how long before I had to turn to a different highway. If you zoom out on the map you can see that you're on 95, but it always tells you to turn onto Turner Black Highway, but it's really 95 and that's the area name of it. From here to Florida there are only 14 turns from door to door and the gps had seventy four.
