5 out of 5 stars Mio continues to Amaze!!!   October 7, 2007

A TTS device for under 2 bills. Wow! Mio continues to amaze with great products and low, low prices. This unit would be a bargain even if they left out Text to Speech. Not too much has changed from the 220 software-wise, or really even the 310x. Menu layouts and skins are pretty much the same with the iGo based software. It features clearly spoken directions, easy to navigate menu to menu, tons of POI's, fast connections to satellites (I connect in 25-30 seconds usually), and in my area very accurate maps. Its nice and small too, easy to put in your pocket/bag or hide away in your car away from thieves.

If you need a reliable GPS, or want to upgrade to a TTS unit this is a No-Brainer! Great job MIO!!!

1 out of 5 stars Very Frustrating To Use   September 26, 2007

Spent six hours at night try to get this device to work. You must be very patient to read through a 90-page user manual just to get some basic idea of how this device operates. I had an old Garmin C320 and there is no comparison. Although Mio C230 has more features, Garmin C320 is much more user friendly and ease of use. Something I really hate on Mio C230:

1. There are only two favorites locations that I can save: Home and Work. If I want to go to my uncle's house, I have to type in his address every time. If I find a shop that I want to visit later, I can't save it. On Garmin, I can save infinite number of favorite locations.

2. The computerized voice really sounds bad compared to the Garmin.

3. Poorly writen manual.

4. No USB cable to connect PC.

I am going play around for a few days and will probably return it for a Garmin C340.

I can say the hardware is okay but the software is really bad.

5 out of 5 stars Belated Kudos for Mio C220   September 24, 2007

This is a belated review for my Mio 220 (I have to keep my friends from borrowing it tho they have much more expensive devices of other brands). Plus, the new Mio 230 sounds outstanding keeping with the Mio momentum.

4 out of 5 stars Easy to use, solid GPS navigator   September 23, 2007

Getting a good vehicle GPS for under $200 can be tough, but after shopping around online and reading several reviews, Mio appears to stand out. My own experience with the C230 is that it's extremely easy to use and serves it's purpose quite well. I'm not sure how the C230 compares to the previous model, but it has several nice features. The fact that the computer voice actually speaks the street names is a nice touch, and can be hard to find unless you buy the more expensive models with other bells and whistles. The navigation is very accurate and I haven't really had any problems. So far, it didn't recognize only a couple of side streets that lead into stores, but it has all the important streets. It will get you to your destination. The display is very clear and easy to follow. The voice is very clear, and gives you plenty of heads up when a turn or exit is coming. You would basically have to ignore the system altogether to miss your destination. To me it was not important to have MP3 capability or Bluetooth, so this unit is more than adequate.

5 out of 5 stars Has text-to-speech (TTS)??   September 14, 2007

I don't have this model, but I have the model that this one is replacing (c220). I believe today is the first day that this model is being released in the US, so there is not too much information about it yet, but a couple sites selling this unit reported that it has TTS (text-to-speech, which will read out the street names). If it truly has TTS, then this will by far be the cheapest TTS-enabled GPS unit out there today. The next non-Mio GPS unit that has TTS will be the Garmin c350, which costs almost twice as much as this unit. So if the c230 REALLY has TTS, then I will have to give it 12 stars!! Another very cool new feature this unit is suppose to have is that the maps are now stored in the internal flash, which completely frees up the SD card slot for future expansion. The screen is suppose to be new and improved as well. Everything else pretty much stayed the same.

Now, there is one negative side to this new unit. It is much less hackable. With the c220, you can get to the OS level and add third party applications to it (i.e. media player, picture viewer, games, etc). However, with the c230, there is no way to exit MioMap, because the exit door has now been removed. For the average user, this is not a big deal, but for hackers out there, hacking is now a lot more difficult. Perhaps someone will figure out a way to hack into it regardless, but at the moment, I don't think MioMap v3.3 is easily hackable.

With all that being said, I will be the first to line up to get this new unit. The older c220 was already way awesome, beyond its time, so giving it TTS, maps on internal flash, and supposedly a new and improved screen, the c230 will be the buy of the century!

========= UPDATED ON 10/10/07 =========
There is one piece of info that many sites have got wrong. How many POI does the c230 have? Some say "almost 1 million" while others say "3.5 million", which is the same as the c220. Well, I finally called Mio tech support and have spoken to a manager. Apparently, they have REDUCED their POI database on the c230 to 900,000!! When I asked why in the world they did that, they said that after they put in the latest MioMap software with TTS and the latest TeleAtlas map updates, they realized they don't have enough space in the internal flash. So instead of putting in more memory, they took out more than 2.5 million POI. That is just terrible! They tried to comfort me by saying that they have only took out the non-important POI, so the remaining 900,000 are the most important ones. Horse radish! Because of this "stunt", I might have to reconsider whether to get the c230 or not. And I was so excited too. Bad Mio.
