Great Value and Very Responsive Signal. January 14, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
To start, I am very new to GPS technology. After seeing my friends MIO c220 I was fascinated and decided to get a GPS myself. I was mainly deciding between the Garmin and Tom Tom. After evaluating both the pros/cons of each I thought about that first MIO my friend had and came across the MIO C230.
Now you ask, what can this little guy do:
1. Very compact - I would say the screen is a little bit bigger then a playing card. I was surprised how easily this unit fits into your pants pocket.
2. Multi-point routes - Meaning that you can set multiple routes to progress one after another. For example, suppose you want to go from your current location, to the gym, then to a restaurant. You can program this unit from the start so one route will follow after another in order.
3. Signal - the signal is VERY strong.
4. Text-To-Speech - Yes, it will say "Turn left on YONGE St in 500 M"
5. Canada Maps - The standard unit does not come with these maps. However, You can easily download these from the net (use google).
6. Customizable - Search google.
7. Cost - A text to speech GPS for as low as $150 - $175. Well worth it.
The drawback:
The internal memory of this unit is listed at 1 GB. Due to this limitation, there are only about 900,000 POIs and no Canada maps. However, it does come with expandle memory (SD) and you can purchase a card to add your own custom POIs and maps.
Highly Recommended to the new GPS consumer, especially if your the consumer only comparing TomTom Vs Garmin.

Zip Code Glitch! January 12, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
The MIO c230, c220, and possibly other models have a zip code problem (at least in the Pittsburgh area). This unit couldn't even get me to a normal address in downtown Pittsburgh. I put in the downtown zip code and the Mio c230 wanted me to drive to a suburb with the same street address but different zip code. Then I tried looking for my destination starting with the city first. This time the c230 gave me 2 choices; the previously mentioned suburb and a downtown location, both listed with the wrong zip codes. I called the company and was told they have no updates available to fix this problem (yet). Additionally, the Mio was difficult to use with an approximately 90 page pdf file manual (on a disc). In comparison, the Pharos Drive 150 I switched to came with a 29 page pdf file. I returned the Mio and decided to try the Pharos unit, since it was so highly rated by Amazon's Editors. Thus far I am much happier with the Drive 150. It is easier to use, more up to date, and comes with a bunch of useful accesories. Although I should mention you don't have a zip code option on the Pharos, as well as some other models including Garmins. However, the Pharos has not lead me to the completely wrong place yet, like the Mio did. The Pharos does have the correct zip codes listed once it finds your possible choices for destination. Starting with the city or area first has been remakably accurate with the Pharos Drive 150. If you want the correct information, stay away from the Mio c230. Also, my friend's Mio c220 has the same problem. Worst of all, MIO doesn't have any way to fix this glitch. If I had been in a city I wasn't familiar with, the Mio would have gotten me lost. Good luck if you get one.
Great value January 10, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The MIO c230 works fine and it is a a great value. There are few GPS units at this cost with full voice directions. The menu system is a little quirky compared to garmin units -- but it is functional. The voice level is not as loud as some others GPS units. The mounting stand is excellent. Overall, it is a very good unit at an excellent price.
me oh my mio January 8, 2008 I received the Mio as a Christmas present and am still in the process of learning how to use it. It works nicely except for a few shortcomings. My major concern is that its map program has some mistakes in my neighborhood, leading me to question whether there will be mistakes when I try to navigate in unknown territory. Also, our house is 500 feet from the road on which we live, and the program thinks the address should be some 100 feet from the road. As a result, when we get to our house the unit places us on an old carriage road, now a hiking path, that passes by our house. The road has never been used for cars (only horse and buggies) but the program tries to start us off on any itinerary from that location.
I like the idea that additional maps can be added via the SD slot. I am anxiously awaiting release for the American unit of Canadian and European maps, so that we can use the unit for walking routes on our travels.
On balance, I am very pleased with the unit and will find it even more useful with the additional maps.
