Mio c230: a lot for the money December 23, 2007 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
The Mio c230 is a lot of navigator for the money.
1. Its 3D street/hwy display is impressive: looks pretty and is bright. 2. It verbally tells you the street names. 3. It can simulate your planned trip but the trip speed is somewhat slow. 4. It allows some variable control over the callback volume. 5. It allows you to put in multiple locations and to optimize the order of your destination arrivals. 6. You have control over statistics displayed: arrival time, time to next turn etc. 7. QWERTY or Alpha keyboard - your choice. 8. GPS carriage is sturdy and easy to manipulate. 9. Suggests alternate routes. 10.It is almost full-featured. Exceptions include: *No voice-recognition of user commands. *No address storage by name (only limited past history). *No recall of last voice command. *The POIs are limited, but not a deal-breaker for many. *The small 3.5" display may be hard to operate for fat finger folks. *Arrival announcements don't specify which side of the street. *The learning curve on this unit may be daunting to some - but it is worth the wait. *Map chipset doesn't know where some on ramps are, and it won't always tell you which direction to go (e.g. Fwy Northbound). As a result, you have to plan ahead by getting a visual on the map. *Getting a GPS signal from a cold start will take between 1-2 minutes, other starts during the same day will be shorter. *Sometimes the unit will reboot during long trips, but it picks back up in about 30-45 seconds without losing a beat. *When there are fast turns, one after the other, you may have to slow down while the Mio catches up. *Alternate route flexibility needs improvement so unit will follow your lead if you take a different path. (Problem on most units)
Be careful of reviews based on limited user experience - tell-tale signs include words of euphoria as well as absolute statements. The excitement is understandable because of the adrenaline rush you get when one of these babies navigates you correctly on your first trip.
However, most GPS units have some limitations like real-time traffic that isn't really real-time, maps that aren't 100% accurate, or the tendency to get confused in parking lots. The science is still being developed and is getting better over time...
The Mio c230 has many features often found in larger, more expensive units and is a good deal for less than $200.
GPS Route Calculations are Unintelligent even with techsupport help December 23, 2007 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Frankly, the unit is very stupid in choosing routes, it will get you to your destination eventually.
This unit wastes your time in ridiculous routes that only a LOST out of towner might choose if they did not know the area.
One time it told me to drive on a parallel course with the SR-520 highway to get to I-405. This parallel course is 30 miles/hr with MANY stop lights. While the SR is 60 miles/hr with no stop lights. It connects directly with I-405.
This example above was repeated over and over in other circumstances.
I went to Google Maps, I chose the same TO and FROM points, as I expected, Google Maps made smart choices in use of Highways and which exits to use.
In conclusion, I returned the unit after 3 days.
Good product but limited POIs December 23, 2007 Excellent one for that price. Accurate most of the time. Less POIs in-built. Extra POIs available for extra cost, but its expensive than the actual unit.
Never lost again December 21, 2007 I am very bad when it comes to maps and directions. This GPS (Mio c230) has become my new best friend. The maps and screen are very bright and clear. The voice is very loud and clear, the pronunciation of street names while not prefect is very good. The interface takes some getting use too. But once you learn it you are set to go. The points of interest could be larger. But if everyones points of interest were preprogrammed in the unit you would need a terabyte of memory. You can add your own. When the Mio tells me to go right and I go left it recalculates very quickly. The price and technology is unbelievable and it fits into my shirt pocket with no problem (I'm not kidding). It does not have a build in MP3 player, it will not show your family photos, it does not play satellite or HD radio. But it will get you where you want to go. And that is what counts.
best value for the price December 21, 2007 pros: - i like the cockpit view and configurable display options - small size - text-to-speech - custom poi loading using sd card slot - not as intuitive as other GPS, bcz of lot of option on small screen. not a problem for me, used to in couple of days.
cons: - need to recalibrate screen everytime when rebooted - maps are not in detail, doesn't tell if destination is on right or left side of the road - AC power adapter is not included - very few POI included, major stores like walmart, target, costco etc are not included
