| Customer Reviews:
Small, but not too small June 6, 2008 I spent two weeks in the USA with the c230, and enjoyed using it. The interface may not be standard or intuitive (as others have written), but after fully reading the on-line manual, and quite a bit of practice, I can handle all of the features without too much effort.
It would be nice if it learned from when I don't follow its instructions (e.g. when it says turn left where there is no left turn - rare, but does happen) and offered to update so that next time it will do the right thing. However, I don't know of units that do that.
The price was fantastic - under $150, with all the USA maps - which is really why I bought it now, even though I didn't really need it.
Great little (easily hackable) GPS! May 30, 2008 I've had this Mio for about 5 months, so I figure now's a great time for a review. I got the c230 fairly inexpensively from an after xmas sale, and i've been more than impressed by this unit.
The #1 benefit of this GPS is that it's easily hackable and updateable. I bought it with its paltry million or so POIs, but i've since added maps with far more POIs to its database, as well as some custom POIs of my own using POIharvester. It's also a relatively simple task to add a media player to this, so on those long drives on the interstate where all I do is keep going straight, the girlfriend can switch to the media player and watch a couple movies from the SD card. The speaker is plenty loud for that.
The GPS text-to-speech is also very useful. The mount is perfect - no worry of slippage or such. The slim profile is great.
My only complaint is that the tts speaks far too often, and sometimes too late. When the GPS notices that i'm going 85, it should give me earlier notice, with fewer "coming up in 900 yards; coming up in 700 yards", etc.. I get it, i'm slowing down and about to turn, but i'm not going to go 30mph down a 1 mile off-ramp for the tts to catch up.
Very poor mapping software and no upgrades available May 28, 2008 This GPS has a lot of nice features. The text to speech is very good and the screen is sharp and easily visable in all lighting conditions. The interface is not really intuitive and the user manual is poorly organized and difficult to decipher. The realy weak point of this unit is the mapping software. There are many errors: Streets misnamed. Streets that do exist are not shown and streets that don't exist (and never did) are shown. When I type in my address the unit takes me a mile and a quarter from where I live. Same thing for my work address. POIs are very limited, although you can downlaod others from the web. There are no map updates available from MIO! I called tech support because the C230 does not adjust for Daylight Savings Time when in "Route To" mode. It shows arrival at destination an hour before departure. Tech support was very quick and friendly, but they told me, although they were aware of the error, they had no way to fix it. If I had it to do over I would not purchase this unit.I wish I still had my Garmin Street Pilot.
Hope it was a lemon, but ... May 28, 2008 I had to send it back. Saved POIs came up with changed numbers three-quarters of the time(e.g., I input "3001 Hwy 7" and find "3119 Hwy 7" when I look at the POI). Tech support was good - less than a day to answer email, and quick when I called, but they suggested I reinstall the software, and I found that the unit would not be recognized by my PC. Or any other PC. (The unit would charge from a USB cord, but would not connect.) I probably would have accepted a replacement, but Amazon was back-ordered over a month, and current price is doubled.
mio May 27, 2008 it works well. the speaking voice directions is the reason I bought this one and it does do it. sometimes the pronunciation is off - but bearable. the only negative I have is when in map mode and you try to scroll the map or zoom in and out the accuracy of the touch screen is not too good. this also has an effect when inputting data - so you must be sure you input carefully. this is my first stand alone portable gps - prior I was using my laptop and microsoft streets and trips - so I find this mio to be more convenient to use.
