Good value December 12, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this unit as a gift and it seems to compare favorably to my Garmin Nuvi 350. I would have bought this instead if it had been released sooner.
One with good value December 11, 2007 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
With the price that comes with text-to-speech, I consider this one a very good value.
I have tested the unit with some intensive driving under snow inside a city and still works good.
I took it driving in the middle of night in the woods, and it took me to where I need to be.
Yes, all maps has errors. I found one destination I am familiar with, the routing result does not show where it is supposed to be. I tried the same destination with Garmin 650. Guess what, it routes to a road that is no longer there.
Yes, the POIs is less than other units. Bear in mind that no map is 100% correct. I use GPS as an assistant, not expecting I can close my eyes and drive car around.
However, c230 has some features not available from Garmin unless you want to pay for $700-$800.
With the combination of price and features, I consider it a good buy.
Inexpensive, and probably worth it. December 4, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
At $139, this was a steal for a beginner Text-to-speech model. However, you get what you pay for.
Pluses: Inexpensive, works (mostly), decent mount, text-to-speech
Minuses: Tele-Atlas maps are loaded with errors, distances on alerts seem off resulting in some late warnings, low battery life. Unit gets confused when you leave the road and enter a parking lot. Low number of (strangly selected) Points of Interest.
Here is an example of a problem: Going from I-95 North in Boston to I-90 West, the unit guided me to "I-90 Massachusetts...Pike" instead of "Massachusetts Turnpike Westbound". On the reverse trip, it sends me to "Yankee Division Highway" instead of "I-95" or "Route 128", the much more common names for the same road.
But for $139 (post Thanksgiving special) I can't complain too much, but if I were to do it again, I'd probably go with a Text-to-speech NAVTEQ model. Regardless, I still think GPS units are miraculous technology.
Mio C230 a great GPS for the price November 27, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
******Mio 230C Pros******** - Small enough to fit in your pocket - Text to speech is great to have at this price - Auto route calculation when you miss a turn, - Allows you to input your own POI's and create subfolders for them, - Cockpit view has all the info you need to see what maneuver is coming next and when, - Very customizable map color themes - Uses the SiRF Star III chipset for quick and very accurate satellite lock - Auto night mode uses time and time zone to adjust itself - Auto zooms when you are nearing your destination (configurable) - Charges using USB cord, - Allows you to remove certain maneuvers and or roads from your route, - SD memory card slot allows you to save your personal POIs and settings - Window mount is rock solid - Uses 2007 maps - Allows you to input latitude and longitude coordinates this comes in very handy when getting coordinates from other sources like Google earth or POI listings on the internet. - Price - got it for $172.00 on sale in Nov 2007@ CC.
******Mio 230C Cons******* - Needs a stylus unless you have needle fingers, - The SD slot is not used for anything else other than saving your POIs and settings, - Battery life is short (like 2 hrs, 4 hrs if you use the smart screen feature), - Very limited POI database (less than a million), - Menu system does not flow intuitively, - No map update available as of this review (Nov 2007) - Found a two year old road missing from the maps, - Most of the roads on military base in town had wrong names, not sure if this is done on purpose for security reasons or Tele Atlas is just sorry. - No hard copy manual, it comes as a 92 page PDF file that you have to read from your computer unless you want to spend the resources to print your own, - GPS gets confused when off road and in car mode (parking lots is one example).
good gps for the price November 27, 2007 The Mio C230 is the best value for a gps with text to speech. It is small and easy to use and the directions are accurate (except it sometimes takes a longer route). Per the instructions, the first startup of the day can take a long time, but is pretty quick after that. The only really down side is when it tells you to turn in 100 yards, it is more like 100 feet.
