This is a terrible product and they don't stand behind it April 16, 2008 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
I bought this for my wife, and it consistently gave wrong information about locations and directions. Further, when we tried to return it, neither Mio nor Amazon would accept it because it's beyond their 30-day policy. Do NOT buy this product. No one stands behind it.
Exceeded my expectations April 15, 2008 I like the fact that you can hack the unit and allow other applications to run on it, too bad there is no headphone jack for privacy. I also like the way that you can zoom and pan through the map by dragging ur fingers across the screen. Excellent value.
Unbeatable value! April 11, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I got this unit on sale at Best Buy for $120...a wonderful deal. Within 5 minutes of getting into my car, I had the GPS up and running and was able to quickly figure out how to work it (I am pretty tech-savvy, however). It picked up a satellite signal pretty quickly and never lost it from what I could tell. The only drawback to the unit is that the points of interest programmed into it are severely lacking (about 900K). After perusing the net for a bit I was able to come up with updated maps and points of interest(POIs) for it (about 12million). The updated maps did require me to use a SD memory card since the internal memory of the GPS wasnt capable of storing the larger maps/POIs. Another cool thing about this GPS is that you can unlock the software. It runs on Microsoft Windows CE 5.0, so with some other easy downloads, I was able to run other programs to play movies, music, and games. The routes that it has taken me on are pretty accurate for the most part. It has options to select between fast, short, or economical. Highly recommended for someone on a small budget or just in the market for an entry-level unit.
Terrific Dollar Value April 10, 2008 In terms of "value-for-your-dollar" this unit is PERFECT. For a sub-two-hundred dollar piece to have "text-to-Speech" as an included feature was a pleasant surprise. Now, take that for what it is. Are there features I wish it had and doesn't? Absolutely. NavTraffic is a feature I'd probably use a lot. Bluetooth would be a great addition.
I keep going back to the price though, for someone who has never owned a GPS, this is a wonderful introduction to the technology. It's small, easy to setup and a piece of cake to use. I did want to mention a couple complaints I had about its functionality.
First, this is probably a matter of the device not using an external antenna, but occasionally the GPS seems to have a hard time connecting to its satellite. It'll do it eventually, but it takes it a minute or two. Not a huge deal, but a little annoying when I'm ready to hit the road and I'm just waiting on the GPS to calculate my route. On a related note, I'm pretty sure this is extending from the same problem, but the GPS seems to always think I'm a little bit further behind then I actually am, occasionally causing me to miss some turns. Although, this is when the 'text-to-speech' feature comes in really handy.
The POI selection is really (noticeably) much thinner then other GPS's.
The menu system could probably stand to be streamlined a bit. It's a little difficult to navigate sometimes. Just for example, setting the time is damn near impossible. There's about four or five different set-up menus, each with a different set of preferences. The menu navigation is definitely first in line if I was to point out an area that needs improvement.
One last thing I did want to mention, in terms of differences between the 220 and 230 models, I'd SWEAR the battery life of the 230 isn't nearly as good. I don't know if its related to the brighter screen or the louder volume, but I just don't remember my 220 Unit draining as fast as the 230 seems to. If anyone else had the same feed-back, I'd be interested to hear it.
Overall though, for what's being offered at its price, it's impossible for me not to recommend this. I've been very happy with it since I picked it up.
Mio c230 April 6, 2008 I really like my Mio c230. I'm not very techo-savy,and it's very easy to use. I had it up and running very quickly. I especially like the text-to-speech feature. (The Mio c230 was the cheapest GPS I could find with this feature -- a must-have as far as I'm concerned.) Also it gives me -- or more importantly my kids -- the time and miles remaining on our trip. No more "How much longer?" And it's much more patient than my last "map reader!!" ;-)
