1 out of 5 stars Horrible GPS, excellent graphic display   April 5, 2008
4 out of 4 found this review helpful

I was very excited about getting this GPS unit, the graphic displays and the realistic view at junctions would really be a great help driving on jersey roads, however the unit turned out to be flat out junk. When i first opened the box, it was missing the window mount, i immediately contacted amazon and they said there was nothing they could do about it. Then i contacted the company and they said i had to send the serial # and it would take 14 days to process the order. From there i turned the GPS on, only to find that it had me located on the wrong street while i was sitting in my house. Needless to say i wasnt please but i thought i would give it a chance, so i took it out for a spin, i plotted a destination in the next town only to find that the location was not on the map, so i continued to plot a course that was on the map, and started to drive, only to find that when i was about to make the turn onto the entrance, the unit could not pronounce the words properly, it precisely said "turn left on to rt42 north bradge (which is supposed to be bridge), i laughed, and continued on, when i got near the town i was headed to, i went right past it, why? Because the map stored in the GPS didnt have the exit that was constructed on the highway 8 years ago, it tried to turn me onto the original exit which had existed back in the 90's (which was all grass now btw). I turned the car around, went back home, and put in an RMA request and sent the unit back. Navigon still has a long way to go.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome!   April 5, 2008
This GPS is acurate, simple to use and nice looking. The screen is very clear and the volume is loud and clear as well as adjusting itself to road speed. Software updates fast from Navigon's website but you will need to get a "Palm" type usb cable. The 3D view at complex intersections is a god-send. I had it in NYC and it navigated me around busy street to street without error. Simply put, you can't beat this for the money!!!

The arrival time is always the wrong time. Sometimes it corrects itself. It is off by 4 hours.

5 out of 5 stars Navigon 2100...a good GPS at a reasonable price   April 2, 2008

A well made, competitively price GPS unit.

This unit has maps for all the lower 48 states. It comes with car charger and your choice of either windshield suction cup or dash-top adhesive disc for displaying your unit.

What is MISSING in this particular product (and included as standard features on the 5100 and 7100 series) are...

1.)A home charging unit
2.)No instruction booklet or DVD. You have to go online to download a PDF file and go from there.
3.)Neither accessory card is included; the Traffic Control and Zagat POI (points of interest) must be bought separately.

the good...

1.)the unit is well sized; my initial concern was that it was small, but once on the windshield it was big enough to easily read without blocking your vision.

2.)easy to program routes with the ability to put in various way points in between your start and finish. (however, see con: 1.) below)

3.)if you 'save' your destinations, way points, etc., you have the ability to 'rename' them; this may not sound like a big deal but you might find it more helpful to have the I-81 north of Harrisburg PA named as such (for ease of recall at a later date) than named the 'Veterans Highway' with no indication where it is.

4.)I liked the snap in/out device that actually holds the GPS; this made the unit easy to put up and take down if you didn't want to leave the unit in your car while unattended.

5.)3D viewing is available for all usages as are voice directions; larger, more detailed maps are used in larger intersections, cloverleafs etc.

6.)the level of luminescence is variable for daytime/nighttime driving; a very nice feature as the daytime brightness is extremely bright at night.

7.)There is a toll free phone number to reach customer service if needed. I had a question about my unit and called 'support', after a couple redirects from the automated answering machine I was connected to a 'real' person...impressive.

8.)once you register your unit online, any updates that are available for downloaded may be added to your unit through a computer connection.

the cons:

1.) because there was no manual with this unit, learning to program this unit (although in hindsight, this was not particularly difficult) was more complicated that it should have been.

2.)the unit's battery only last 3 to 4 hours when the unit is not plugged into a power source (either at home or in the car).

3.)the connector cord to the unit from the cigarette lighter charger went straight into the unit, from the under side; this means you need to have 2 or 3 inches of space between your unit and the dash top or else you could possibly kink the charger cord. Motorola makes a right angle adapter (SKN6182)that solves this problem.

4.)The Traffic Card and the Zagat Card only cover major areas.

5.)the computerized voice had an unpleasant tinny pitch to it and quickly became VERY annoying; fortunately, it can be turned off.

Conclusion:
1.)A reasonably priced, basic GPS that works well.
2.)It is very useful in finding and directing you to particular spots once you are in the general area, e.g. a specific address, a certain restaurant, an ATM or gas station etc.
3.)I found it less useful on planning long trips as it tended to suggest routes and turnoffs that were less than optimal for my chosen trip.

Addendum: April 28/08
A new software version 1.2 has been released and is available from the Navigon website for registered owner of the 2100, 5100 and 7100 series. Hopefully this new software will improve the route selection process used by the GPS and make its suggestions more useful.

5 out of 5 stars Best invention since calculators became common !   April 2, 2008
I love my Navigon 2100. I bought it on a serious impulse to never get terribly lost again after I did in a new town one night. I had a long and dark time finding my way after asking for directions several times and using my computer printed directions ( which is still a good idea for back up). I decided to never feel stupid like that again.(I have been lost before, also). I wanted to feel good about driving to a new place and not feel that I was not able to do it. In other words, solve your problems about getting lost with a Navigon 2100 GPS without paying a ton of money. Do it today.
Radio Shack, Amazon and computer research led me to this inexpensive, fun little item that is the best thing since calculators became common for personal use.
I wanted point to point directions, street names, voice, points of interest and a few basic, good features. I wanted something easy to use.
Do print out the 50 pages that tell you exactly how to get the most use out of the Navigon 2100. It does not come with an instruction book, so do print the directions from their site and read them.
I also bought the little house indoor power charger so I could have the GPS ready when I needed it without always using the car charger. I need that sometimes for my cell phone. I also wanted to sit outside and practice the directions from the book. If it does not work for you, then you are not using it correctly. It is similar to reading directions for a new cell phone and then the use becomes easy.
It does just what I wanted it to do and it fun to use. It even says "Please ! Turn left" the second time you skip a turn, especially when you are running around town and you know a different route. After that it goes on "Recalculate" and catches up with you. I do practice using it now in town before I take it on a big trip. The satellites will also suddenly fade out now and then for a few minutes ( I think all of the GPS's may do this briefly), so I think it's good to still have a paper map or computer driving directions in the car. I believe I will never be really lost again in a new town on a dark night, depending upon strangers who can give wrong directions with this fun device that is a blast to use and so helpful. I paid $149. and have a warrenty, too. Buy the indoor charger for $20. from Amazon. Store it in a nice lunch zipper bag with the charger and take it down when you get out of the car. You do not want to have your newest toy stolen !
