A little dissapointed March 25, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I already owned a Garmin Nuvi and then saw and fell in love with the look of the NAVIGON 2100. But when I got it I was very dissapointed. For a few reasons. The power connection is on the bottom so you cant rest it low on your dash, The NUVI has the power cord conected to the mount so it it always pluged in no matter if you remove the sysytem from the mount, the fonts on the NAVIGON were so small I couldnt see them (I wear glasses). There are many features the Navigon has that the Nuvi dosent. Like the fwy feature and how it shows all up coming fwys on the screen that the NUVI dosent. The Navigon is a very nice looking machine, I think I was just use to the NUVI and prefered it over the NAVIGON. Bottom line is, if youve never owned a GPS system, NAVIGON is a HOT item.
Worst performer yet for a GPS March 19, 2008 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
This unit is about the worst GPS I have ever used. In addition to all the cons everyone else has, I will add the following:
.. Inability to set time to local time. The unit only uses the GMT from the satelites, and thus the ETA displayed is always wacky and incorrect. There is no settings to set the actual time.
.. Lack of useful POI's. Everyone else has a decent list of installed POI's, this one simply does not. It has a few, but they really want you to PAY more to unlock ZAGAT, which is already inside the unit anyhow.
.. Useless driving info. The GPS works fine, maps are decent, but taking it driving can leve you frustrated. Whats missing is your NEXT Maneuver! The unit will tell you to go straight for 3 miles, which is fine, BUT it does not tell you what you going to do after that in advance. So the problem is your on a 4 lane highway, going 60mph in the center lane, you have no idea if your going to exit left or right, and the darn thing wont tell you until you get within half a mile. You may or may not have the time to get over to the proper lane to take the exit and I have often found myself whizzing right past where I should be going because I could not get over in time.
.. All map updates will cost $$$. The mapset they used is woefully old, at least for my area, and they have already stated that IF they ever make a new set, we will have to pay for it.
Lastly, I want to tell you about why my Navigon was tossed out the window of my car. I got a phone call, the one everyone hates to get. It was from the hospital, telling me that my wife was in an accident. (Turns out it was not that bad and she is fine now) Anyhows, I then had to make a trip to a hospital I have never been to, so I was going to use my Navigon to get me there. (Mind you I didn't know the actual address) I went to the POI screen, selected Health section and went to find the hospital. All that is in there is every pharmacy in the 50 states, but NOT ONE DARN HOSPITAL. Apparently if you need hospitals in your POI, you have to buy the zagat upgrade. So when I really needed my Navigon to help me, it could not, and thus, somewhere on SR 295 in Maryland are the pieces of a Navigon 2100...
Nice Device if You Don't Mind Paying Addl $100 EACH Quarter for Map Updates March 14, 2008 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
I just called Navigon. Asked about map updates and was told they could be more or less $80-100 per quarter. This would be in addition to your Traffic Card and your Zagat card. Because of the map updates, and I really like this product alot, it falls from 5-stars to 2-stars.
Moral: Do your homework before you buy. I feel like I have given someone a shackle as a gift.
Very good unit at a good price March 13, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is my second navigation unit. My first unit was a little pocket PC with navigation software on it. I placed the little pocket PC in a suction cub holder and attached an antenna. The problem with the pocket pc was that if I did not use it for a while it would lose the navigation software and I would need to reinstall it. It also took up a lot of space. I found this Navigon 2100 at a great price and did not expect much from it but so far I have been very impressed with this unit. It is very small (but just the right size) and it comes with a suction cub holder. It is very easy to install and remove. It finds the satellites right away. The antenna is built into the unit. I expected a thick instruction book but the instructions are only 4 pages. It is very easy to use and I have been amazed with the precision and accuracy of this unit. I have done some travel with this unit and it works great. It has a lot of points of interests such as airports, railway stations, restaurants etc. It displays small arches when a McDonalds is nearby. I highly recommend this unit.
Good but Bad March 13, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Good visuals, good map and easy to follow the streets once the address is put in but thats the thing the address has to be put in every time, its a headache to find a place that you are outside of 20 miles from. Lots and lots of POI that should be on there arent, so i had a Garmin when i started and had no problems so i just went to the Garmin 660 and love it tremendously. So all in all this is a great product if you already have the address ready to go, if you have no address then good luck.
