5 out of 5 stars I love this toy!   March 12, 2008

I was tired of using mapquest and printing directions, big waste of paper etc. I needed something that would tell me not only where I'm going but where I am. So I decided that for Christmas I wanted a portable GPS. I looked at all the other models, finding out what options there were. Went to store to check out what I found, then looked online to find a good price. This delivered the best. There is a slight delay sometimes in getting a signal, have to slow down a little when typing but this is a great product. No more waiting for my husband to get to step 16 from step 1. My only real complaint, and for all I know it may be an easy fix, is that the clock is not for my time zone. I believe it's set for GMT. Otherwise I've found it to be completely adjustable to whatever options I want at any given time.

5 out of 5 stars Tried many - Keeping this one   March 9, 2008

I have tried TomTom, Mio, and others. Basically I have tried all units at the 250 price point and lower. Bottom line, I want a small, portable, competent unit that provides value, that if stolen will not bankrupt me to replace. You can trade feature for feature, why one is better than another, but this unit is the one I kept.
Estimated time to arrival is most accurate and recalculates en route depending on speed. Text to speech, excellent maps (little known, they hired away navteq map people to build their own maps), lifetime traffic for $150. The GUI is the best. I don't need a video game of color distracting me and other drivers while driving. The muted pallate is perfect for real world driving. The GUI depicts every important feature once you learn it. It is easy to glance at and know exactly what you want to - am I still going the right way. TTS is fine all around, but after a while, it gets annoying so I mute it anyway. Keyboard is small, but once you get used to it, no big deal. I can safely input while driving. The corporate logo icons displayed on the screen are great and useful - every other unit has a gas pump, what if I prefer Shell. People complain about there only being 1.3M POIs. Everything I have sought has been there, gas stations, parks, tourist attractions, food. I really don't need to know where the next Gap or Walmart is , remember, we all still have a pair of eyes to look through the windshield with.
Sometimes the routes are a little different than what I would drive, but other times it shows me a shortcut I never knew about. The only place it gets a little confused is on Surface road in Boston (over the big dig tunnel), since it wants to stay locked on the road (93 expressway below) it thinks you are on (and especially if the buildings are blocking a 3 plus satellite 3D lock). Overall, I am very discriminating and knowledgable about consumer technology and I cannot see why anyone would need more than this unit for 150.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite   March 3, 2008

I was shopping for a GPS and was hesitant about buying this one. I was considering a Magellan 4250 which was on sale for 299.00 and the navigon 2100 which I ended up buying for 120.00. When I was looking at them side by side the Magellan has a larger touch screen which is more responsive than the navigon. That is the only drawback of the navigon, the touchscreen is small and lags alot. But since I've been using it a few weeks now I am so happy that I went with the navigon. For 120.00 I got a GPS with voice guided directions and when I miss a turn the rerouting is almost instant. The real killer feature, which no other GPS on the market has, is the reality view. Spiderweb highways are a breeze because of this feature. I was able to do a side by side road test comparison with a coworkers Garmin nuvi, which he payed 500.00 for, and the navigon performed just as well and has the added benefit of the reality view. Unless other GPS manufacturers get something to compete with the Reality view I will never switch to a different GPS.

5 out of 5 stars Great unit for the cost, adjust it to your liking!   March 2, 2008

I bought this device for $144. I purchased the add on traffic for $70. First, this is not going to be a world beater GPS system, but for the cost it is well worth it. The complaints that are out there, are easy to fix and adjust. You can adjust the text size, to make things easier to see and you can adjust all the icons to make them more appeasing to your eyes. You can even take out some of the stuff you won't use, to make the system quicker. All of this can be done with simply copying over some files on the unit.

Typing on some of the small inputs is pretty easy, but if you have large fingers, it may be difficult. I don't see the slowness that some have complained about, it is quick enough for me. I haven't had any issues from that perspective.

As far as looks, I give this thing a 10 out of 10. In terms of routing, I give the unit out of the box a 6 out of 10. After making adjustments to its calculations (Again taken from a GPS review site), I give it a 9 out of 10.

In the end, it works very well for the cost. Navigon is making adjustments to their "stuff" as they go to make it better. In the spring, they are supposed to release a patch that will make the routing better out of the box, and make the unit faster. (if any joe-schmoe can do it, Navigon can). The unit is nice and compact and, like I have already said, you can adjust the unit to make it your own. Not many others will let you do that.
