4 out of 5 stars Impressive design, attractive price, rich features (comparison with Navigon 7100 below)   December 18, 2007

I had bought Navigon 7100 first and picked up the Navigon 2100 when it came with the life time free traffic information as a promotion. For a couple of weeks, I debated on which one to keep. In the end I ended up keeping 2100 and returned the 7100 model. Here are my thoughts/comparisons on both models. Depending on the weightage you assign for each of those criteria, your decision may differ (both are great models).

I primarily decided to keep the Navigon 2100 considering three factors
1) size
2) price
3) life time traffic for free as a promotion with Navigon 2100.

2100 is smaller and hence easy to carry with you when you get out of the car (something that I would do if I leave the vehicle in a public area -- say shopping mall). I did not feel that it has less real estate for navigation purposes when compared to 7100 that has a 4.3" screen (It does look nicer to have a bigger screen, but functionality is not lost or crippled with the smaller size).

Other comparisons:
=> 2100 doesn't have Bluetooth (I didn't like that functionality in 7100 anyways)
=> 2100 seems to be a lot slower in picking up the satellite on startup. It doesn't pick up the satellite when inside my house, whereas 7100 sitting next to it does pick it.
=> 2100 only has US map for 48 states (no Canada). 7100 has all of North America (US 48 states + Canada + Hawaii)
=> 2100 has fewer points of interest (may be helpful to have more once in a while) when compared to 7100
=> Keyboard response of 2100 is really slow to the point that it gets annoying. This goes on the big negatives column and is a problem with 7100 too, but to a lesser extent.
=> I really liked the stand for 7100. The stand for 2100 has a smaller reach, so the device will be farther from you when attached to the windshield.

I like the feature where it (both models) shows the road view on complex intersections.
In the end, the price is too high to keep 7100, especially since I got the life time free traffic information on the 2100 model for a cheaper price.

Summary:
I preferred a 3.5 inch flat model as opposed to 4.3 inch models for portability. Free lifetime traffic support was a key for me to pick Navigon brand. Design style was a bonus compared to Garmin (that I have used in the past). Directions computed by the device seems to be fine so far. Overall, a good stylish product with some cool features.

4 out of 5 stars Gets the job done   December 15, 2007

My rating is more like a 3.5 rounded off to 4. The rating reflects the price that I paid: ~$200 with lifetime traffic. Currently (12/07) it is priced at $175 without traffic. At this price I will give it 3 stars and would probably prefer products from Garmin/Magellan/Tom-Tom that also speak street names and are currently priced at around $225.

The good:
- Features for the price such as spoken street names, reality view, speedometer (I found out that my cars speedo is off by 6 mph!)
- Thin, Looks sleek
- Informs about upcoming turns 1 mi and 0.2/0.1 miles in advance. Most of the time it speaks up 0.1 miles before the turn, but sometimes it is 0.2 miles.
- Screen is bright and has got good resolution.
- There is a feature which increases the volume of the spoken directions with the speed of the vehicle. Very useful.
- Route recalculation is quick. Routes are reasonably good. I really don't care if the route is 0.1 mile longer than optimal. If I am going somwehere for the first time, I am more interested in reaching the correct destination. If I go somewhere regularly, I won't be using the gps anyway.
- Quickly finds the GPS signal. If coming out of sleep mode it takes less than 30 seconds. If you have turned it off, and then turn it on, it typically takes less than a minute.
- Suggests possible completions while you type in city/street names. In most cases you will see the desired match before typing in half of the name.
- Traffic service should be helpful if you hit slow moving traffic. Has not happend to me yet, but I do see lots of incident reports.

The not so good:
- Data entry is a bit slow (as it searches for possible matches).
- Sometimes route recalculation gets stuck if you are stopped at a red light. Frustrating.
- Pronunciation of city/street names is not very good.
- Voice start breaking up at heavy volume.
- Buttons at the corners are difficult to tap.
- Froze up on me once.
- Once it did not ask me to take an exit onto a freeway. I took it since I saw it on the screen.

I have not used the POI database. I hope that they take care of the software issues with an update. I believe there is a map update coming out in Jan. 2008. Overall I am statisfied for the price that I paid.

4 out of 5 stars Good product! Spotty customer support.   December 13, 2007

I've used the unit for several days and on a business trip to Atlanta and I must say it is a very nice piece of equipment. The NAVTEQ database used to make the maps is about 85-90% accurate. I was told by one of the tech Reps that NAVIGON is releasing an update in early 2008 this should correct many of the outdated businesses, wrong directions and addreses.

This stuff is manily third party database problems not unit problems. NAVIGON needs to include computer software so users can add there own POI. Also the database needs more points of interest (POI). I can't believe that they don't include post offices, churches, superstores and many more very important POI in the POI search. Example : Had problem finding Fontana Dam in the data base, it was not included.

I downloaded an update of the software in late April 2008 to solve the problems above.. The new software is erratic. 50% of the time It sends you in the wrong direction or makes the trip longer. We wanted to go to Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains; we were at Pigeon Forge,TN. I knew how to get there, but wanted to see how the unit worked. The unit gave great directions until we got to a cross roads. The unit wanted us to go up an one way dirt road to get there. We asked directions and was told that only traffic on the way down can use that road, that wasted 30 minutes. I can give you 10 more instances of bad directions or long way there directions.

The unit is so small and includes a mode for walkers/hikers great for the pocket, but unfortuntly no map info of hiking trails is included. I like the fact that the unit displays your altitude it's a neat feature. It would be great IF users could overlay maps from a product like DELORME topo maps. Hikers, fisherman, and other outdoorsmen would love such a feature. Other features that would be great to include in furture firmware upgrades would be a weather info/forcast, weather radar/satellite overlay (very important), and weather alerts from NOAA with automatic location detection.

From what I read and understand is that the unit has an automatic time adjustment feature for change in time zones and for daylight savings time.

Final thoughts, the database and the route management needs to be improved. Could be "The Best" if NAVIGON added more features mentioned above for a great navagational trip product.

++Fast, precise, detailed, friendly UI, stable, stylish, strong brand, reality view, good POI.
--No auto switch, no line assistance.

Fast - picks the satellites up fast.
Precise - Gives clear instruction right in time. Reads streets names. No mistakes with the side of the street.
Friendly UI - UI organized in very simple, intuitive way. The text input is convenient. Navigating thought the map is easy.
Stable - It runs on Windows CE. The application is working stable without failures.
Stylish - Unit looks cool. No sharp corners.
Strong brand - The company known on the market of "in dash" GPS from 1991. It has wider range of devices designed for Europe than for N. America.
Reality view - Reality view adjusts well to correspond to the real view.
Good POI - this unit has 1.6 millions of POI not 6 millions as 5100 and 7100 but it seems it covers pretty match all you may wish to find.

It does not have auto on/off switch.
This unit does not provide lines assistance.
No auto day/night switching of the screen.

5 out of 5 stars Works as I needed it to be..   December 11, 2007

I was searching for a <$200 GPS unit which announces street names so that I can concentrate on driving.. this unit caught my eyes as it had a life time free traffic update (FREE).. bought it for $204.99 + the Free traffic activation card in Amazon on Nov 25th.. (got the price adjusted by calling Amazon, so $174.99 + free traffic).. Amazon delivered it next day free shipping too..

The unit works great, caught the satellite signal in less than a minute and it worked right out of the box without any problem.. the destination arrival announcement is also pretty accurate (lotttt better than tomtom, which is off by atleast 100 mts easily or more in many residential areas).. Lot of good features or basic settings which will help naviation a beautiful experience rather than a hazzle.. the unit is made in Germany and boy, I was happy to see a product made in a different country other than China..

Initiall, you may have trouble in punching the numbers or letters as they touch screen buttons are little smaller compared to other gps units, but once you get used to it, it's a happy situation.. 1.3 million POI is more than enough for me..

so far not noticed any problems, but the product uses windows ce, which is a concern, but nothing to worry about.

good luck and I am happy with my purchase..
