Beware! December 11, 2007 6 out of 11 found this review helpful
This is absolutely useless to me. I have used it going to familiar places just to test it out and if I didn't already know the route I would have ended up completely lost each time. Whenever the road curves it tells me to actually "turn" right or left. I was going on a road with no side streets and it told me to "take a right" 3 times on to the road I was already on. It has given me some really out of the way routes that take 2-3 times as long as the most direct route. I would never trust this GPS to get me anywhere that wasn't familiar to me.
Nice device, but the sluggish interface brings it down. December 10, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Great device, i looked at it alot because of the price and features, i had just previously messed around with a garmon 220, and a tomtom one. Well the garmin wasn't to customizeable, but the interface was great, and perfomace was good. Tomtom was a great one to, but things like poi's were odd on there, and it had some map errors.
Now about the navigon, the text to voice is great, most things are pronounced perfectly. the realityview is actually very helpful if you do alot of highway traveling, it gives a good view of what the intersection will look like. I don't have the traffic service, but beware of it, from what i saw on the site its only for certain areas, so research that up before you get it.
The interface is the only bad thing, its nice looking and decently put out. But the response times can be frustrating when putting in addresses. I liked how on my tomtom i would set it up to be a standart qwert keyboard style. this one jut has an abc style on the right that is vertically drawn. The response times on inputting data is pretty bad, if you type to fast you end up getting garbled words and have to erase it, which erasing takes forever to because it keeps trying to automatically figure out what it is again when you delete a letter.
Customization is plentiful which is a very big plus, like what you have on the screen like displaying, mph, total mileage, estimated arrival time.plus while your driving it shows REAL logos like for burger king, mcdonals, BP and such. POI database is ok, like 1.3 million of them, not great but not terrible i suppose. has about any resturaunt or gas station and others such as car dealerships, grocery stores, and has other things ive found like bookstores. but is missing alot of things like target, walmart, radioshack, best buy and all that. so if you don't need it for random locations your fine, it has all the basics.
overall highly reccomend, just takes a bit of getting used to, and isn't great for using while driving because of the sluggish interface which is easy to make mistakes on.
Worth Its Weight In Gold December 8, 2007 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Count me as one of the lucky folks who picked this up on Black Friday for $99, including traffic reports. Three days later I used it on my Ft. Lauderdale/Miami vacation. I entered some of my Florida destinations when I was still home in Long Island, NY. I had some trouble with some of the addresses being changed by autocomplete. But I did get all of them in. The unit acquires the satellite signals very quickly. It also re-calculates fairly rapidly; I missed a turn-off on a highway, and in a few seconds it recalculated and told me to get off at the next exit, just a few hundred feet from the first choice. And the "Reality View" is a great feature at multi-exit points. Also, make sure you go into the menu and sellect "avoid toll roads." Another great feature of this, or any, GPS is you can't get lost! I drove to a festival on Las Olas Boulevard, Ft. Lauderdale and wandered around looking for a place to park. I had no worries about getting back to a point where I could find my way back to my hotel--I just had to choose "Saved Destinations" and "Ramada Plaza" and it quickly calculated a route back. I have had 3 problems: 1. The traffic feature does not work (nor does it work on a friend's unit, also purchased from Staples on Black Friday). Navigon tells me they are trying to catch up with the huge Black Friday sales, and know of this issue and a few others and will contact me "soon." 2. The unit crashed when I set it to bring me to a destination (my friend's housing complex) a few blocks from where I was. When I turned it on again the next day, it was still frozen. Had to reset and turn off. The unit then "punished" me--when I left the complex, and knew I should go left, it said go right. I went left anyway, and figured it would re-calculate. Instead, it told me to make a U-turn, which I did, which sent me in the wrong direction. It then told me to make ANOTHER U-turn, which then sent me in the correct direction! 3. The POI will show "Joe's Chicken Shack" but not a huge WalMart. Hmmm. I also should mention that the unit is very small. When I left the car, I popped it in a small cell phone case, and wore it over my shoulder. In conclusion, this is my first GPS, so I can't compare it to others, but I am extremely satisfied with this unit, and for the price, feel I got a great bargain.
My review of the Navigon 2100 December 5, 2007 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
I bought this unit for $149 on sale and it came with lifetime traffic support. My previous GPS was a Mio C310X bought last Black Friday. I like the Navigon 2100 for its improved features over my Mio, but as far as PIOs, the Navigon is the worst of the worst! I can't find ANYTHING useful in the POI listings. Not only does it have a very limited listing of POIs but its ability to get you that info via the search function is horrible. Its really a shame because I like the unit - the screen is nice (needs more colors) but the fact that I can't search for anything really hurts. My family relied on the MIO to tell us where things were in an unfamiliar area - and now that has been taken away from us by the fine people at Navigon. I'm afraid I cannot keep this unit in its current state and it will be going back.
Navigon 2100-my best auto GPS December 5, 2007 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have owned 4 previous GPS units for automotive use including the Acura and Lexus plus several handheld units. This is by far the most user friendly. Satellite acquistion is fast. The unit automatically determines local time. Traffic is very current and helpful. Destination input is easy. Operation is intuitive. Considering the price of this unit which limits the size of screen, you won't go wrong with this unit. No AC power but the battery life is sufficient (at least 4 hours) for inside programming. Live US tech support that answers 7 days a week is a big plus. This unit is a "Home Run" for Navigon.
