5 out of 5 stars Cool GPS   November 28, 2007
I got it in staples for $99 (Black Friday deal) I was not comfortable buying this as the company is not as well known as Garmin, TomTom etc but I used it on my trip to New York from Cincinnati ...I love it.
Text to speech quality is excellent, speed warnings, traffic updates millions of POIs it is a real good deal.

3 out of 5 stars Nice GPS for the price, but low on POI   November 27, 2007

Bought 2100T in staples on BF ($99). Looks cool and works fine. I have been checking out for a GPS with text-to-speech at a low price. This fits in , but there are some serious issues.

Pros:

- Good screen presentation of map and instructions. Displays the "speed limit" when on the highway. Also, the "reality view" is really cool which gives the picture of complex interchanges as you approach them, though static photo is presented. You can go back to normal mode by just tapping on the screen.
- Text-to-speech is loud and clear. Good feature at this price. Minor pronounciation mistakes.
- Life time traffic free with 2100T, havent tested it yet.
- Locks to satellite and keeps it, though the satellite lock time is much higher compared to Garmin.
- Cool black finish in a plastic housing.
- Fits well into pocket.

Cons:

- Routing : If you miss the route calculated by this GPS, it requests to take a U turn , even if U turn is prohibited. Also, it tries to take a zig-zag route ( tested with route profile as Fast). Didnt find any difference between short and optimum routings.

- POI: Its very hard to find a POI with this GPS, the intuitive auto-fill takes a long time. The POI data is very less, it doesnot find stores like Walmart or target ( or even Staples from where i bought it :) , nor even few hospitals nearby. The POIs on your route doesnot show up immediately. If you come to a complete halt, then it shows the icons ( with exception of Gas stations and the Mac )

- Customer Service : After quite a bit of follow up ( 2 emails/ 2 phone calls), got the response about the POIs that are not found . "The 2100 comes with 1,500,000 POIs and most retail stores are not included in that list." (I guess these number of POIs should be good enough to include such big stores and hospitals.)

- GUI : Data entry is really tough, need a stylus to do so.

- Map: Has only map of lower 48 states, not the whole NorthAmerica.

- Updates : There is no software, like in garmin, to hookup and get the updates. Also, i didnt find any way to update the GPS with data by exporting .gpx file e.g, from www.navitraveler.com ( you can do the same for Garmin/Magellan)

Bottomline: This is a nice piece of GPS at the price ($99), but definitely not yet ready to compete in the market. With the original price, there are much better models in the market.

4 out of 5 stars Great unit on the cheap.   November 26, 2007
This is a great unit for the price and features. Right out of the box you are ready to go. Very minimal setup.
Pros The text to speech feature is a real help with the spoken street names a bonus for this price. Also the traffic data was free. The suction cup stuck right up there and the cradle is easy to place the unit in and remove.
Cons Sometimes there is a slight delay in the screen responding but its not that bad at all. Also it seems the signal is slow to pickup sometimes also but again a minimal inconvenience. Also I wish the cord was about a foot longer so it might need some creative wiring on my part.

Overall I think its a great unit with better features then some of the other starter models out there.

4 out of 5 stars Point A to Point B? No problems.   November 26, 2007
I've been interested in getting a GPS unit for a while ago, and after seeing this for $149.99 at Office Depot, I had to bite (I wasn't going to mess with Black Friday deals). It also included a mail-in form for a free traffic subscription. Consider this review "incomplete" until I can test out the traffic feature.

Initially, I was disappointed with the touch-screen accuracy, until I realized that there was a protective film over it. Once that was removed, the touch screen works fine.

I don't have anything else to compare it to, but so far so good. Over the last week that I've had it, it's gotten me around DFW (where I live) and the Austin/hill country area. I've noticed that it doesn't know all MY shortcuts, but I need to spend some more time adjusting the shortest/fastest route settings.

It takes about 45 seconds to find the GPS signal.

Also haven't really used the Point-of-Interest feature much either, nor do I plan on needing it that much.

As I said, I can't compare this to any other GPS units, but on face value, it gets me where I want to go. The GUI is nice and clean, and the unit hasn't frozen up on me yet.

Will come back and complete the review once I can test out the traffic.

5 out of 5 stars Great GPS with just one negative point   November 26, 2007

I always do a lot of reasearch online before buying an electronic product. But i got this on BF from staples for 99$ with free traffic update for lifetime( a 60$ value). First the positives this peice is worth every penny

What would you expect in a GPS :

1. Good Signal reception :4.9 stars : Cold start(starting for the first time) is okey. But the best thing is when the signal is lost due to tall buildings or tunnel , it gets the signal back so fast than other GPS i have used.
2. Accurate Maps : 5 starts this unit is uptodate Navtec maps
3.Affordable price :5 stars great deal for the money
4.Text to speech : 5 stars (means can spell out the names of streets other just say turn right this says turn right at wold road) this is a great feature and its not available on tothe GPS at this price range.
5.Easy of use: 3.5 stars(not a big deal though): entering text can be little difficult for people wiht big fingers as screen size and font may be smaller. interface is little sluggish but when u over come this initial part its faster than many other GPS. this is not a problem if u have a good commonsense.

then this device specific plus points....

1. Reality view : this is the best innovation in this GPS very usefull when u go thru complex lane changes like around newyork city. a killer feature which will be must have soon in other GPS.
2.Nice graphics: this graphics is more fancy and like flash based so its better and good for the eyes.
3.sound quality and colors: very loud and good color combinations.
4. Compact : easy to take it out of your car and move due to the form factor.
5.Traffic for life: i got a 60 $ traffic for life subscription free and its very usefull.

Now for the negative ..as i have used few GPS systems i think this is the only thing i find is a problem (other than the initial sluggishness which personally i dont think will be a problem.)sometimes the routes shows are not very optimum inside a city .i know much better routes but i think its a problem of most of the GPS systems. they cant think like humans :)

i defenitely would buy it for someone i got it for 99 $ on BF but i think u can easily find them for 170 $ on normal days.
