I'll never leave home without it May 21, 2008 I recently used my TomTom One XL-S on an 1120 mile round trip from Maryland to Ohio and back and it guided me perfectly from door to door. The voice announcements are clear and easy to hear even at Interstate highway speeds with the window cracked open. I like the fact that it warns me two miles ahead of a freeway exit which lane to be in for the upcoming turn. In one case on my trip there were two exits very close together, I got into an exit only lane a little too soon and wound up getting off the freeway one exit too early. The TomTom quickly recalculated the route and told me to make a left followed by another left and within a couple of minutes I was right back on track. For a person who navigationally challenged by no natural sense of direction whatsoever this is a godsend!
This thing sucks butt. May 20, 2008 I brought this as an upgrade to my Magellan 2200t, and even through it had more features than my 2200t the directions were terrible. I know that any GPS device is not 100 percent on the money and in a lot of cases it is off a little. The Tomtom was often trying to make me take turns onto roads that I didn't have to take to get to my destination. One time I followed the directions to see where it would take me. I made a right and then just a little while later it told me to make a left. That left would have put me in a ditch and into the woods. And the deal breaker was the way I had to access the Point of Interests (POI). I now have a Magellan 4210 and while driving if I see a POI on the screen all that I have to do is tap the screen to view a list of all the POI in the area. Now with the Tomtom I would have to work my way to the menu screen to see something or find something of interest. Also in bright sun light forget about looking at the screen. And my Magellan screen changes from a daytime screen to a nighttime screen. But I will give them credit for a few things, free map updates, and you can customize the voices. I'm very happy with my Magellan 4210 and even happier Amazon allowed me to return the item.

My father wanted this TomTom. This was the best value on the web, and received it in perfect condition.
Leave time to return it before going on vacation May 15, 2008 I paid $30+ to have my Tom Tom One XL-S shipped to me immediately. I did this because I was flying to a vacation destination in a couple of days and renting a car to drive to other spots after arrival. Tom Tom is supposed to work out of the box. It didn't. I put it on a USB connection to my computer to charge it, to see if that would make it work. It doesn't come with its own charger -- just the USB connection and a car cigarette lighter charger. The USB connection brought it to life, but the device wouldn't accept a full charge. I called Tom Tom for help. I then tried the charging patterns they recommended, which aren't in the manual (either the little one that accompanies the product or the large downloadable PDF manual). Those suggestions didn't work either. The unit wouldn't accept a full charge. The only remedy Tom Tom would offer was for me to send the unit back to them to be repaired. That would take 3 weeks, thereby defeating my plans to take the device on vacation and flushing $30 down the toilet for expedited shipping costs. They rejected the idea of sending me a replacement unit and allowing me to simultaneously return my unit pursuant to a return authorization. So much for working out of the box. I have subsequently learned that the unit will accept a full charge using the cigarette lighter charger. I can live with that.

Overall, not a bad GPS, but there are a few quirks.
1.The voices tend to mispronounce some of the city names. Often, its more humorous than troublesome, but this also transfers to street names. This was more noticeable in California, where Spanish names seem to be more difficult. 2.The map update coupon for 30 days is almost worthless. If you've never used a GPS, or used TomTom Home, you might get the wrong idea that your GPS is up to date. On the opening screen, it will tell you that your TomTom is up to date after downloading minor changes to map sharing. For the new user, they could easily mistake that to mean the maps are up to date also. 3.E-mail support consists of a quick canned response to indicate that your message has been received, but due to unusually high number of incidents.... blah, blah, blah. The follow-up response does seem like it comes from a real human, but instead of a response, they indicate that they will "forward the message to the appropriate department for you". The appropriate department must be their survey department, as that is the only follow-up you get. 4.Maps, on a couple of occasions, were inaccurate. 5.Newer areas (1-2 years old) weren't included, but should have been. 6.Though most of the menu was easy to navigate and understand, some wasn't.
As I stated, the product, for the price, really isn't that bad, but I would rather spend a few extra to get more of what I wanted (smaller footprint, bluetooth support, etc.). I'll probably wind up keeping this as a backup system, and go with another company. I guess that a negative experience with a company tends to leave a bad taste. Hopefully, my experience isn't normal. For the GPS unit itself, I give a 4. For Customer Support, I give a 1.
