5 out of 5 stars This thing is a life saver!   January 15, 2008
I'm quite directionally challenged. This unit is amazingly helpful for people like me. It got me across the entire state of New York in the dark to a place I have never seen before flawlessly. One caution use your eyes and don't rely only on the number of feet/yards to turn. That is sometimes off by enough to confuse. However, the spoken directions and street names are accurate. It is a great starter unit for the directionally impared. The user interface is very intuitive and easy to learn. The touch screen is large enough for even the clumsy (like myself) to use with ease. I even got one for my Grandma!

4 out of 5 stars Tom Tom One XL S User Review   January 14, 2008

Good one...I realized how good & Comfy it was having a Voice telling the Street Names & Text to Voice on the Screen. Makes Life really easy & safe.

No wondering if you really got to turn in the street.. U can confidently make the turn with street names visible on the screen.

over all..XL-S is a real Edge Over XL

Only draw back is Tom Tom XL-S can not be upgraded to latest version on the web. I tried to update it & realized that I lost voice on my GPS. I spoke to Customer service, they sent a file which date backs my Tom Tom Version to original Factory version(7.1.4)....Its working fine now.

No problem I really didn't see any useful features in the updated version 7.1.6.
On the whole its good at this price.

Excellent product. Is easier to use than sales people in the store tell you. It performs better than other similar prodcuts ai have used on the market, such as Garman

4 out of 5 stars DO NOT USE THE MAC SOFTWARE FOR THIS DEVICE   January 12, 2008

I Like the GPS unit. I like the tomtom Windows software.

However I am a Mac user.

Here is the problem:
If you are a Mac user, when you first install the tomtom software on your Mac (tomttom HOME) and connect your tomtom XLS to the Mac, totmtom HOME will recommend a tomtom OS/firmware update. IF you allow this, tomtom HOME for the Mac will install the WRONG or FAULTY tomtom firmware/OS update. After that, your XL S WILL NO LONGER HAVE A FUNCTIONAL COMPUTER GENERATED VOICE. The recorded human voices will still work, but the COMPUTER generated voice will no longer work. The computer generated voice is the whole reason you purchased the XL S over the XL; it is the computer generated voice that reads street names and warnings aloud to you; the pre-recorded voices cannot do this.

Bottom line, if you have only a Mac, do not get this device until tomtom corrects this issue. If you have windows access, then you are fine.

I corrected this issue by opening tomtom HOME in Windows, then deleted the tomtom OS/Firmware from the GPS device, then performed an update within tomtom HOME to replace the tomtom GPS OS/Firmware. Once I did this, everything worked fine again and I had a functional computer voice.

1 out of 5 stars Autozoom - Preset Zoom Level   January 12, 2008

One of the features of this unit is 'autozoom'. This means that, when viewing the map while the unit is in the 'deliver directions' mode, the software will select the zoom level. You can zoom out to see the next exit, next town, or next city, but the map will return to view your immediate vicinity after a few seconds. If you're driving any long distance, you can't set it to see your overall progress. This autozoom feature can not be disabled in the XL-S model.

After conducting some research, I found that it can be disabled in the 720 and 920 series by TomTom. (It can not be disabled in any of the Garmin Nuvi models.)

You will search the web long and hard for this information. Sadly, no reviewer finds this important enough to point it out. I noticed it as soon as I started using the XL-S. 'Sticky' zoom settings may only be important to a few of us, but for me it is enough to pack up the XL-S and return it. I will be trying out a 720.
