2 out of 5 stars Good device lousy software for Mac OSX   December 28, 2007

I am using a mac running OSX. After downloading the software update for this TomTom, it lost all sound except the drum beat on startup. Spent several hours on the phone with tech support to get the problem fixed. But the computer voice is no longer on the TomTom so the ability to anounce street names has been lost. The tech told me I could restore it by using a Windows PC. The purpose of this electronic device is to make your life easer, so far it's not the case.

5 out of 5 stars Great...and not too expensive either   December 28, 2007

This is my first GPS unit. I decided to go in the middle of the road as far as price. I found some of the cheaper models didn't have a large screen, couldn't read street names, no battery. This is a great device. It has a 2 hour battery life, reads street names, has a large display, and is VERY easy to use. I love it.

Have been using this gps for only a month, but worked right out of the box. Easy to use. Definately like the voice diections. Even if you still make a wrong turn, it racalculates right away to get you back on the right track.

2 out of 5 stars Returned it.   December 27, 2007

I got this as a Christmas Gift. I returned this item. I am a Mac user and found the Mac software was poorly designed and trailing far behind the windows software in features. The Mac software crashed 3 times. I borrowed a friends windows laptop and was finally able to get to the free map software update feature. It was not updated because the unit already had current maps (I question this -- there is a thirty day limit on free maps -- what are the chances a new map will be available 30 days after Christmas?). A lot of work to find that out! However, the software updated some features of the unit and the voice part completely stopped working. Restored from backup and it was fixed. Reapplied updates and the voice broke again. Restored from backup again. Unit came with nearly full memory - might be related to problem. This is a UK manufactured item. All items for cost (such as maps etc) are in british pounds. I'm sure that the brits might be used to looking at prices in US dollars ( don't know), but be assured that the reverse is in no way true. TomTom has come on strong in the US market, but I think these guys are not serious enough about this market, and they are having a bit of a problem with SW quality control. I predict they will loose the US market because of a lack of attention to detail. Maps in my area (southern california) are out of date. Tried to route me over a 50 ft deep drainage ditch where there is no street, never has been. Next I will try the Garmin Nuvi 650 at the same price. I'll let you know.

5 out of 5 stars Tom Tom XLS   December 26, 2007

First of all, I received the Tom Tom XL within a very short time after it had been ordered.

The XLS is a fine GPS with most of the features needed. I particularly like the way it zooms in when the vehicle slows down or approaching the next programed turn. Speach to text works well with only some mispronunciations with strange street names!
It is easy to used and very intuitive.

I would really like a paper manual to be included with the purchase. It is easier for me to take my time reading it and highlighting the features for subsequent reference. You nearly need a ream of paper to print out the on-line manual !!

A feature I would like is to have the ability for the GPS to provide current altitude. Any GPS is capable of doing this. Why is it not available on the Tom Tom XLS?
When are more computer voices going to be available?

I would also like the unit to have a longer battery life than the 2 hours. Apart from my own personal wishes, the GPS works well, is accurate and locks on to the satellites quickly.
