gps June 19, 2008 I am very happy with this Garmin. I'm glad I went with the larger unit; it is a little easier to type in and see. So far, the mapping instructions have been right on!

I acquired the Garmin Nuvi 260W Garmin nüvi 260W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator to use in New Mexico.
First, I must admit that I have used it only a handful of times so far.
It takes a very long time, several minutes at least, to find a sattelite. I like the wide screen and it is easily viewable. The sound is good, loud and clear, the pronunciation, however, is so poor, that one sometimes is not sure which road is being referred to. The warnings for turns are good but once at the street you are looking for the Garmin is useless. It will get you to the street you want (sometimes by a circuitous route) but it has never yet found the correct house number and can be half a mile off.
To be fair I look forward to testing the Garmin more widely and comparing it to older GPS it is a vast improvement.
Garmin 260W June 19, 2008 Garmin 260w, works like I thought it would, some of the stuff the computer says sounds VERY MUCH like it has downsyndrome, especially when it says "recaululating". It has a slower load time when starting up and a way way slower time finding it's satellite. But once you get it on it works great. It's alot thinner than the old Garmin and that in turn makes it feel more fragile, I keep thinking I'm gunna break it so I'm extra careful when handling it. All in all I find it was a very nice upgrade from the C330 Garmin I used to own. The slow loading and satellite finding time is why I gave it 4 and not 5 stars.
Wonderful product June 16, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought the Garmin Nuvi 260W for a recent trip to Niagara Falls and it was worth every penny. It got me to every store I wanted to shop at. It even showed me a few places I didn't even knew existed. All the tourist attractions were so easy to find. It even found some nice places to eat. It works really well if you have a detour or need to get around a traffic jamb by rerouting you.
I only had one time when it couldn't connect with the satellites, but it was short lived.
If you are looking for a good basic gps unit, this is a good one. I didn't want the Bluetooth capability or traffic alerts, just wanted a reliable unit with text to speech. It is so worth it to get the wide 4.3" model vs the regular model, really makes it easier to see in a large city area.
I also bought the friction dash mount, way way easier to use than the window suction cup mount, stash it under your seat and take the unit with you in your pocket/purse, no one will know you have one and break into your car from seeing a suction cup on your windsheild. Batter could last a little longer, but charging it up is a snap.
Great maps of US and Canada included with this one, comes in real handy if you frequent both countries like I do. Worth every penny!!!
Garmin 260w Nuvi June 16, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I think this is a great GPS unit. I had researched several brands and models from a Consumers Reports review, but settled on the Garmin Nuvi 260w based on performance, price and availability. Amazon had it on line with free shipping and the best price I could find anywhere. For the money, it does everything I want it to do and more, plus it does it well and is easy to use. I would definitely recommend it to anyone considering the purchase of a GPS.
