2 out of 5 stars Not impressed   June 15, 2008

I was one of the first customers, and tried the device for a few days to see if this is worth the monthly fee. I also own a number of other PNDs (Garmin, Megellan, TomTom) and an iPhone. I purchased this device because I am a big GPS fan, so I was curious to see what the device can do.

Compared to a Garmin Nuvi (which is my favorite), the interface is still a little clumsy, and road names / minor roads are difficult to decypher. The iPhone traffic (by Google) is more accurate for highways, and the routing choices of the dash device sometimes puzzled me. Integrating Yahoo local is nice, but I can't browse items on the map; I need to use a search window and the results are returned in a classical browser-like fashion. Finally, this is one big unit; I really like the small form factors of competing devices.

In the end, I didn't see why I should pay a monthly fee given that I can use my iPhone for traffic and local search. So I am now not using this device any more. The same device 2 years earlier would have been GREAT.

5 out of 5 stars Only GPS worthy of my dollars!   June 14, 2008

This device is great. It is the only GPS worthy of my dollars for commuting. If you commute, you know where you are going, so you don't really need a GPS. My TomTom was off 90% of the time I was in the car, just didn't need it. With Dash, even though the quality of the maps and voice is not great, it is a much more useful tool. My commute used to average around 1:10 every day. With the best selection of routes, I have been averaging 55 minutes now, saving me 1/2 hour every day. This is awesome. The other cool thing is checking all the different roads around me turning solid colors as more people get their systems. The Yahoo search is also very handy. I have used a couple dozen times so far with great results. Some other reviewer complains that is out of date; but then so is Yahoo and Google... Dash cannot do better than the Web. One minor problem: the "lady in the box" can't pronounce anything in Spanish, unintelligible.

The Dash is a great idea and concept hobbled by an embarrassingly poor implementation. From Yahoo searches that provide out of date information to map data with numerous misspellings and missing roads, the Dash struggles to send you from point to point without making you drive further than necessary, panic when the directions are wrong, or try to make sense of the disparity between spoken directions and the arrow on the screen. Also, don't bother trying to do searches unless the Dash is "connected" - if there actually are points-of-interest saved on the Dash, I've never found one.

I tried it for a month and submitted 19 trouble tickets, 17 of which were already "known" issues that are supposed to be fixed in an undetermined future update. Maybe in the far future Dash will be worth looking at again, but when you can get all of the same features (except "live" searches from Yahoo) from other well-known vendors, why put yourself through hell when you can just buy something else that works?

I say honesty is the best policy. I bought this gps system too early back in may on the 15. i was very excited when my unit showed up i tried it out. i had the unit less than 24hrs i would say 14hrs. I was ready too send it back. here's why i put in streets for my city it gave me streets that where beyond my city into other ones, but it would list as my local area the routing was really poor. i drive for a living so found alot of bugs. one hour left in my shift i have the box ready to ship it back. I get into a wii fii hot spot my unit says i have an update. i download update it fixed my issues i was going to send it back for. later on in the month of june i find more bugs i submit my issues for unit the next i turn it on map team fixed it. the custmer service is top notch they really listen to us and our suggestions. a big update is coming for dash express at the end of june i can't wait to what changes they have done to the format you will not be dissapointed with this gps better than nuvi. i thought nothing could touch them until this came along and blows them out of the water. i read one custers review that said he a nuvi but was really unhappy and got a dash express WOW

4 out of 5 stars Invaluable tool for someone who is always in the car!   June 10, 2008

I've been using my Dash for a while now and it has become an invaluable tool in my daily life.

I'm an IT Technician visiting new clients homes every day. A GPS is a necessity for me in my job. The ability to start my day in the morning in front of the computer and send the addresses to my Dash (via SendtoCar) from my desk saves me time and is a great feature.

Being in the NYC/Tri-State area means a lot of traffic. I go to Connecticut several times a week via I95 & the Hutch/Merrit Parkway and having the ability to see what traffic ahead is a godsend. Is it always accurate, of course not. But since I've been using Dash, traffic has gotten better and better, thanks to the recent traffic update as well as (I assume) more Dash units getting on the road.

On a recent personal trip, driving my mother from her winter home in Arizona, to her summer place at her sister's on the Oregon Coast (3 day trip!) not only did the traffic feature help us avoid parts of the LA suburbs, but helped us find the best gas prices along the way (nice savings there) and also places to stay and good places to eat. My mother was amazed at how far things have come since I showed her my first GPS unit years ago...

Are there some negatives to the unit? Of course. It could be faster and more responsive while traveling. There are some necessary features that I think are missing (auto zooming on my next turn is at the top of my list) and I have had a couple of freezes as well. But guess what? It's a computer! It can be updated with fixes, new features and of course new types of applications thanks to the SDK that Dash has released. I am sure Dash Navigation is hard at work improving the software, making the unit faster and adding the features we all are looking forward to. Patience is all that is needed -- and I would rather have and use the Dash now rather than wait. I look forward to the promised software release that hopefully should be coming soon.

I drive an Acura that I got with GPS built in -- and it has been an invaluable tool for me. Funny enough, now with the Dash and having 2 GPS's in the car, I couldn't imagine NOT driving with my Dash side by side with my now aging built-in GPS.... I feel naked without it!
