The secret to using your Dash successfully. March 31, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I've used my Dash Express for 3 weeks now around the Portland, Or., area. Searched for many destinations and tested it in difficult traffic over tricky bridges having 3-way exits. I had some difficulty with it in the first couple weeks until I discovered a secret that I will share with you.
Success with the awesome Dash Express is really a simple 3-step process:
1. First, use the amazing "Search Connected" button to enter and find the address of almost any location, using Yahoo Search. This function is truly a God-send and better than any other GPS on the market.
2. Next, tap the "Routes" button and watch the 3 wheels spin around, much like on a slot-machine. Gaze wonderingly at the screen as the 1,2, or 3 routes appear. Stare admiringly at the green, yellow and red traffic lines. Again, truly the best-ever traffic information, although you may find there is blessed little you can do about it in most cases. But, in idle moments it is fascinating to watch.
3. Now, the secret to a successful journey: Put your Dash Express in the glove compartment and grab your Garmin, Tom Tom, Navigon, Mio or Magellan and enter the address you found in step #1. Navigate efficiently and dependably to your destination.
This will allieve your Dash headache. You can thank me later.
Nice idea, but who wants another monthly bill... Not me. March 30, 2008 4 out of 54 found this review helpful
NTM, the graphics look like a freshman in High School did it for a project. I'll stick to my bare bones C340.
The dash has features I like March 29, 2008 14 out of 16 found this review helpful
The dash is like many other gps's on the market, just on drugs. While the dash lacks some of the typical functionality found in many of the gps's today, there are many added features you will not find anywhere else such as send to car, Yahoo search, and live/historical traffic data. One of the best features, in my opinion, if the fact that the dash is always connected. This allows you to search yahoo not just for a restaurant, but rather for an actual menu item. If I want a taco, I search for taco and it will bring back the restaurants that serve this particular menu item. Also as new maps or software is released, they are automatically downloaded and installed on the devise. Very cool!!
The unit itself while heavy has a nice design. The two buttons on the top are very easy to use. The touch screen is nice and responsive. I find that there is very little sun glare and the screen is very easy to see even during the bright days. I love being able to look up the start times at local movie theatres and this is a feature I use at least once a week. I also find that while not completely accurate, the local gas prices allow me to find a local station that has reasonable prices (not that any gas is reasonable anymore). Normally I am on the phone with someone as they are giving me their address, but the send to car feature is pretty cool. As I am on the internet and I see an address I need to route to, I just select it and right mouse click. A minute later, it has been downloaded to my car. I was traveling back from Phila International airport with a friend after a weekend in Vegas. We took a wrong turn off of I95 and ended up in a area we really didn't belong. While we thought that making a simple u-turn would put us back on track, we ended up in a worse situation. I had stored my dash under my seat while we were gone. I pull the dash out and plugged in the power. Even after 4 days off being turned off and not starting in the same location I was in at the time of turning it off, I had a gps signal and my location was pinpointed within 20 seconds. We routed our way back to her apartment safe and sound. Dash to the rescue. I have 3 gps units, and currently, the dash is the on I always use...
Reviews or Campaign? March 29, 2008 28 out of 53 found this review helpful
Whenever I see a product with so many 5-star ratings, I get a little suspicious. It's always a good idea to take a close look at the reviewers to see what kind of history they have. If a significant number of 5-star reviews come from first-time reviewers, that's an indication that you MIGHT be looking at an orchestrated campaign. Just an indication, mind you.
As of this writing, there are 19 5-star reviews for this product. Here is how those break down:
13 of 19 (68%) are from reviewers who have not reviewed ANY OTHER product. (One of the 13 is a non-review).
2 of 19 reviewers have rated ONE other product.
2 of 19 reviewers have rated TWO other products.
1 of 19 reviewers has rated THREE other products (caveat: the other 3 are Dash-related).
1 of 19 reviewers has rated FIVE other products.
Keep in mind, this is a snapshot in time. It is possible that these reviewers will add additional reviews, either legitimately or to bolster their credibility.
No Bluetooth support, unit size are troublesome aspects March 29, 2008 13 out of 45 found this review helpful
While it must be heartening to the Dash Express publicity department to hear such a positive buzz from the reviewers here on Amazon, a little perspective is in order.
To this point, virtually all reviews have come from those who participated in the beta testing and received a free unit. It will be instructive to hear the comments of those who paid for a unit themselves.
The monthly subscription cost is $10 - $13, depending on which subscription plan is selected. Garmin offers a year for $60, or $5 a month.
There is no Bluetooth support for this unit. This is, at very least, a very bad marketing decision. Why downgrade from a TomTom or Garmin, with Bluetooth, to this unit?
This unit has less than 25 reviews from beta testers. The Garmin 660 has more than 625, mostly average users. The TomTom GO 720 has over 100, mostly average users. Which Amazon GPS device listing do you think helps you more in making an informed buying choice? You decide.
At 8" X 6" x 6", this unit is not one you can slip into your pocket when you leave the vehicle parked in public. I hope you have a large briefcase for this one. Leaving it in place is just an invitation to a break-in, with the costs and inconvenience that such crimes always bring.
At this point, the Garmin nüvi 660 with Bluetooth and FM transmitter is more road tested and would appear to be a better buy.
I would give a thumbs-up to the update feature, although it appears to only be available to those who pay the subscription fee.
