 Useless November 14, 2008
This one taught me a lesson about going cheap on something that's under $20 to start with. Even when it does connect a given peripheral, there's no guarantee that it will connect it next time the system is rebooted. These are low-power-draw peripherals - card reader, Zen MP3 player, MagicJack phone adapter, etc. Next time I'll spend $20 for something that works. This one goes into the pit.

I have used usb devices since they barely worked in windows 98 - and i would say a usb hub is a terrific device. this hub is no exception, as it replaced another 7 port i had, that wouldnt take more than 4 devices. I have had no issues, although i will be putting black tape over the FLASHING lights in the center of the unit - thats my only issue - other than that, i bought a second, as the first i have had for 3 months, and am quite happy with it, except for the flashing.

Bought this product about 6-8 months ago. Within about 1 month I had my first experience where it wasn't working for one particular port. I have found it "hiccup" a couple of times since then where the port I'm using doesn't work.
It works fine when it works, but I want something to work 100% of time and not have to worry about it possibly not working. This works about 90% of time, but is quite frustrating if you want to do something quickly and its acting flaky that day.

I bought this from another vendor, but having run across it here I feel compelled to let others know about this unit.
1) I'm not sure about the others complaining about this being a 1.1 hub. OS X shows it as a 2.0 device. I've never had any problems with speed using it.
2) However, I HAVE noticed that under heavy data transmission this hub WILL drop connections. I would not recommend hooking up a hard drive to it, as the chance of data loss is just too great. Heck, it even drops connection sometime when I'm just "topping off" my iPod.
3) It connects to the computer via one of those mini-USB plugs (normal on the computer side, mini on the hub side). Some people love 'em, some hate 'em. I personally don't like the mini-plugs, but your mileage may vary.
4) One thing I did like about the hub is that the "wall wart" is a "slim-line" kind and is unobtrusive. The makers did this part well, as it will fit nicely on a power strip.
5) The light show - Oh, where to begin? I ordered two of these hubs, thinking that LED's on a hub would be cool. I received them and tested them out. I then unhooked them and proceeded to cover every square inch of the cases that didn't have a USB port with black electrical tape. Seriously, the LED's are VERY bright and the thing WILL light up your room. It reminded me of some kind of alien tracking device. Good concept, but poorly executed.
6) Construction - The plastic feels very thin, and I suspect if the hub is handled often or used by travelers, that the case will crack with very little effort.
All in all a sufficient hub, as long as you don't hook up a hard drive to it. I've had worse, but I've also had a lot better.
