Royal pain to get working in Vista October 13, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this scanner thinking that it was compatible with Windows Vista. Unless you go to the technical details section for this scanner in Amazon.com, there is nothing that says this won't work with Vista.
Once I received the scanner and opened the box, I found a sheet of paper that instructed Vista users to go to www.canon.com/support-hub/vista/
I did that, but the Lide 25 scanner wasn't one of the ones listed! Now that's just dumb on Canon's part. So then I searched Canon's website for Vista compatibility for this scanner, and after awhile I found the Vista drivers and software for this specific scanner, and started downloading the ones shown. Beware though--even though you have to specify the scanner model and OS in dropdown menus, they include OS/X software in the list, and it's not made apparent until you click on them which ones you're about to download.
So I downloaded the correct drivers and software in the list and installed them, but there were two other Vista-compatible software programs I still needed, ScanSoft OmniPage SE OCR and ArcSoft PhotoStudio. So I went to the ScanSoft website and downloaded a Vista-compatible version, but when I checked ArcSoft's website, I couldn't find a way to download PhotoStudio without paying $80, $30 more than I did for my scanner! Checking the Canon website again, it said that PhotoStudio wasn't compatible with Vista, so I was out of luck, since I primarily intended to use the scanner for photos.
There remains only one thing to do--get an RMA and send this hunk of junk back to Amazon.com. While it may have been my fault that I didn't read the technical details to find out which versions of Windows this scanner was and was not compatible with, everywhere else it says that it is compatible with Windows. Well, Vista IS windows, and it's been out for nearly two years as of 10/08.
Easy and great October 1, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I didn't really need this. I'd just bought a Mac, which was incompatible with my Visioneer flatbed scanner, but I still had my Windows PC and Windows as an option on my Mac. But since I could get an additional rebate through my new job, I thought, why not?
I don't know how I did without it. This thing is so small, I just put it under my office sofa (it's not very tall). It's also very lightweight. I love how it's powered through my Mac's USB, so no extra power cords. And the software is easy to use and very effective.
I'm so happy I bought this. I'm finding more uses for it all the time. Flatbed scanners have come a long way!
Lightweight and portable- I love it! September 30, 2008 I've only been using this scanner for a few weeks, but it is working great, it stores easily and produces very good scans in color and grayscale.
Canon LiDE 25 Color Scanner September 28, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Does a good job scanning an image, but it is noisier than previous scanners that I've had.
my six-month scanner September 27, 2008 I'm giving this product a 4, in part for the service which Canon provides, which is very good. I ordered the CanoScan LiDE25 on March 28th, began using it a week later, and it stopped working near the end of September. I was sent a replacement soon after contacting customer support by email. The replacement I've received is a LiDE70 and the installation disk was defective, but within a day I was emailed information from CanoScan tech support (after a few tries) that made it possible to download the installation software from the Canon website and my replacement scanner is now working. For the price - and especially for the customer, tech and sales support - I'm satisfied. Satisfied with Canon support generally - have found it good and quick for all products I own. I like Kodak quality too, but their online and phone support is virtually non-existent and so I buy Canon instead. Similarly, with Samsung I've had great tech support so now for both quality and support I buy Samsung instead of HP.
