2 out of 5 stars XP Incompatible   November 16, 2008
I have spent hours installing and uninstalling the software. I tried it on my home computer, also Windows XP, and it would not install there either. HP support gave me several suggestions--none of these time consuming suggestions helped. I was ready to return it and exchange it. I had bought a Canon MX850 for home, which installed easily! I tried downloading the HP driver for my husband's Mac (OS-X 10.5), also not a problem. Since my husband is buying me a Mac for my birthday, I'm saving the HP for my office, where I will use the Mac, and keeping the Canon for home. Unless you enjoy spending hours installing and uninstalling software, don't buy this printer to go with an XP operating system.

1 out of 5 stars This product sucks!   November 16, 2008
I have never had so many problems with a printer. At the cost of this printer, I am really pissed that I have so many problems. I have left my cheapy old printer connected because at least it is reliable. I would recommend that you purchase a printer with better reviews. Why pay for a problem child when you don't have to!

2 out of 5 stars Steer Clear if you are running Microsoft Office 2007   November 15, 2008
I purchased this printer and had very little issues setting it up. However shortly after the printer was installed Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint began to crash and close. A window pops up and says that HP knows that there is an issue with the printer drivers and is working on it. How could HP manufacture a printer and NOT make sure it worked with the Microsoft suite of products? They have offered a temporary work around. If you change the default printer setting to a different printer the programs in Microsoft do not crash. However you will need to select the printer each time. For me that is a hassle. I have always had HP printers and have never had any issues. This issue to me seems just plain stupid on their part and makes me question whether to buy another HP printer.

4 out of 5 stars The reason HP continues to dominate.   November 14, 2008
This is the third printer I ever owned (2nd HP) and so far I am very very satisfy with what I paid and the performance I am getting. First of all let's go through some pros and cons:

Pros:
1) Despite the occasional but heavy use, the ink has yet to run out on me and this is the starter pack that came out of the original box.
2) The four card reader slot including a USB slot makes it ever so easy to print photos in a snap. Add on the 2 inch screen and you can even edit the photos to your liking (red eye removal, cropping, etc.) before printing it out.
3) HP seemed to have worked out the kinks of the paper jamming problem, which landed my last printer in the dumpster. Both of the paper and photo feeder works great, and so does the ADF on top for scanning.
4) The setup to get your printer to be connected wireless to your router is very quick and easy.

Cons:
1) It can get a bit noisy from time to time, so if you're one of those people who are irked by this then this printer is probably not for you.
2) For some reason the printer needs to clean its cartridges before printing everything time. Can be a hassle if you're in a hurry.
3) And finally, as everyone has mentioned the software is an issue. While the out of the box software has worked great, HP has included way too many software and applications which I didn't need, but must have in order for the printer to work. As a result I have to kill some of its processes in Windows from time to time in order for my Windows to run normally with no lag.

Overall, this is a very good all-in-one printer. Great for families with kids that prints homework occasionally and also picture printing from vacations, etc. The setup is very easy as long as you follow the included instructions, and using it is also a no-brainer. The use of six different cartridges will ensure that you will only have to replace one color when you run out of that one color.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE   November 10, 2008
I had a Brother all in one printer that was OK, but gave me a fair amount of trouble over the past 5 years. This printer matched that in less than 5 days.

I unpacked and installed the printer with little trouble. But when we attempted to receive a fax, it took up 2 days to figure out how to get it to work. Documentation kept saying "you have to receive the fax manually", but NEVER describes how this is done. We got it to work once, then the next time, a different set of menus appeared. We have it working, but now a new problem has occurred.

The printer keeps reporting it is "Out of Paper" even though the tray is full and inserted. It worked fine for the first 4 days, but when we attempted to copy something, this error started to occur. So far, we have found no way to resolve the issue. So we cannot print, receive faxes, or copy.

Also, the automatic document feeder will not read a document. It stops about a third of the way, then tries to start printing, and the reports out of paper.

I am so sorry I took the chance with this printer. I am waiting to hear from HP, but my ideal resolution is to get my money back on this piece of crap. I won't try any more all in one units. I am going to go back to individual machines, as I have not found one good unit for this stuff.
