Great deal, though price appears to be a little higher now than it was. Wireless setup took <5mins, no issues (contrary to some people's experience)
Fabulous value October 23, 2008
I am keeping this short since other 4 and 5 star reviewers have covered all the good points about this printer. I installed (through router) in a few minutes, no problems at all, and no problems since. It is a dandy printer with a small footprint, is quiet, print quality excellent. And the price makes it a fabulous value.
Great entry level laser printer at a very reasonable price October 23, 2008
I just received this printer today so I can't comment on long-term reliability, but here are my initial thoughts. The machine itself is compact, neat and quiet with a simple design and clear layout. The build quality is perfectly reasonable for a printer of this price, by which I mean it's certainly not fancy but nor is it terrible. It powers up and prints swiftly and the print quality for black and white text is excellent; very crisp and clear. I haven't tried to print images yet but I'm not really concerned about that, since I bought it primarily to print text documents (a similarly priced photo inkjet would be a much better choice for people who want to print graphics).
Setup was easy and quick. I have a Macbook running OSX (Leopard) and I have put the printer on my wireless home network, so I can print to it from wherever I'm sitting in my apartment. This is very easy to do if you follow the instructions. The trick, as other reviewers have pointed out, is to use an ethernet network cable (not supplied) to temporarily hook the printer directly to your router the first time you set it up (as it says in step 9 on page 37 of the manual). Thereafter, it's wireless all the way.
Overall, very happy so far.
Great Price - Even Better Value October 19, 2008
The Brother HL-2170w is a wonderful printer. It's very simple to set up, easy to configure and, at 23 pages per minute, covers all my personal printing needs quickly. The only thing this printer is missing would be a digital readout display however A) One is not needed for this printer to function well and B) At this price I wasn't expecting anything too fancy. All in all this printer is an amazing value for the work it is capable of.
Quality printer, Wireless is nice, & What a price! October 16, 2008
This replaced my 4 year old Samsung M1710 laser (around $100 then) which served me very well. I read most reviews here, and I must say, they had me scared to death to install it on my wireless home network.
I'm happy to report that I followed the directions ("Wireless, using cable temporarily") and used the installation CD as instructed. It took all of 6 minutes and could not have been easier! The print quality is excellent, and the small footprint (same as my old Samsung) is a big plus. Utilizing the wireless, I have the printer sitting across the room and in a cabinet - sweet!
I paid $89 to Amazon, with free shipping. To replace the drum & toner on my Samsung was going to be $65. Thank you Brother, and thank you Amazon. I've recommended to family members (I see it's on sale now at Buy.com through Amazon again), and 2 are ordering today.
